(Rocket J. Squirrel @ Aug. 16 2010,19:25) You are correct Torurot.  The proposed mosque is not at Ground Zero
Well, while it may not be on the grounds of the towers that collapsed,
it really is a part of the true "Ground Zero."

The landing gear from one of the airliners went through the roof of
the building they propose to demolish to make way for the mosque.

Had this building not been vacant; had people been working in that
building, the landing gear crashing through the roof
may well have been a 'killer.'

It is hollowed ground as far as I am concerned.

Sure, JS Muslims have committed atrocities. But you know, no Christians have ever done anything like that. They are all bout peace and love.

I never said Christians were innocent. My point was we've matured to the point where religion isn't the driving force of our society or country, so thankfully no more burnings at the stake or drawing and quartering. I'm sure the Pope would like all the people on this forum on a spit for liking ladyboys but thankfully he doesn't have any real power. But the Muslims haven't matured.

We're getting off topic with this I suppose. I have my view and others have theirs. What I'm really concerned with is extreme right wing taking over the US again.

In a way the 1st amendment is good. Sharia can never become the law of the land as long as the constitution stands.

Have any of you guys ever seen this? http://www.palinaspresident.us/

Maybe I sound insensitive but its not the case at all. I do care!  But if I had to live my whole life based on how everyone might be sensitive to me.. I would not be living my life as I want it. So you can accept me and my flaws as I am or you can't.

That sight is very clever. I clicked everywhere you can click but I really laughed when I clicked on the red phone.

And on the subject of Sarah Palin for President, does anyone really think that someone as smart as Rupert Murdoch, the owner of Fox News, would want to see her in the White House?

I think he is endorsing Obama without actually saying so. That way he doesn't alienate his right wing base, he continues supporting the Tea Party Movement but knows she is unelectable against the guy he is happy to see re-elected.

Old Rupert has been deciding the outcome of elections in Australia & the UK for over 30 years, longer here in Oz & he is known not to be tied to any side of politics. He supports the best person (in his opinion) for the job.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

Google Buzz Meets the New York City Mosque Controversy

Greetings. A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that I'm using Google
Buzz more and Twitter less ( http://bit.ly/b0S30Z [Lauren's Blog] ).
An ongoing thread in Buzz, on the topic of the controversial Muslim
community center and mosque to be built two blocks from the site of
the World Trade Center attacks, demonstrates the vast superiority of
Google Buzz for actually carrying on meaningful discussions that go
far beyond 140 character Twitter "headline" messages.

I initiated the discussion last Saturday by posting on Buzz three
somewhat provocative questions regarding the controversy surrounding
the NYC project ( http://bit.ly/cesZD4 [Google Buzz] ).

            The questions

Lauren Weinstein - Buzz - Public
Questions for the people who don't want a new mosque built near the "Ground Zero" site in NYC now.

            1) How far away from the site would the planners need to go before it would be acceptable? Current site is two blocks away. Would 5 blocks suffice? 2 miles? 10 miles? 50? 100? More?

            2) How much time must elapse from 9/11 before you would find a new mosque in the area to be acceptable? Almost 9 years have already elapsed. Will 15 be enough? 30? 100? More?

            3) Would you feel better banning all new mosques from a specified area of NYC on a permanent basis? If so, would you be willing to ban all other new houses of worship from the same area? If not, why not?

Just trying to pin down the specifics of your concerns. Please keep your answers specific and concise.

            Thanks.

                The questions

                1) How far away from the site would the planners need to go before it would be acceptable? Current site is two blocks away.

                A) Far, far, far away in a Galaxy, where no one has gone before.

                2) How much time must elapse from 9/11 before you would find a new mosque in the area to be acceptable?

                A) 911 years after the thaw of the next Ice Age, or never which comes first

                3) Would you feel better banning all new mosques from a specified area of NYC on a permanent basis?

                A)  Yes! but I would, feel much better if all mosque where banned from being built any where in the Universe.

If so, would you be willing to ban all other new houses of worship from the same area? If not, why not?

The only house of worship that should be built there is the rebuilding of St. Nicholas's Greek Orthodox Church which has been there since 1916 and was destroyed in the attack on the WTC.

I do not follow any religious dogma, and I am tolerant of peoples beliefs with the exception of Islam.

The original question was whether or not Obama would be reelected I think. WAAAAY too early to tell. Someone mentioned that Palin would be the best hope for Dems.. They are correct. The same thing happened to Clinton in 94. The Dems got thrashed but he came back and won a second term. This guy would seem to be more comfortable on a college campus or at the UN Debating Society than he is as POTUS.

I find the fact that people continue to blame the previous administration quite galling. During the campaign Obama had all the answers. He was ging to do it all. Hasnt worked out that way, has it? He turned out to be just another phony, two bit politician. Youse are shocked??? I said that all along.

Lets get this mess of an election season over first shall we?? I think the Dems are gonna get slaughtered. What does that mean?? A takeover of the House and a possible takeover of the Senate. The tide looks really shitty for the Dems.. They are quite vulnerable to lose BOTH houses.
                      Be careful out there!

Here's a nice little article for all you "all Muslims are evil" types to chew on:

                          http://www.alternet.org/story/147864...s_more_muslims

                          Why America Needs More Muslims
The absurd controversy over the proposed Islamic center in New York shows that many Americans need to meet some Muslims.

August 16, 2010 ] There is already a mosque near the site of the World Trade Center -- it€™s been there since 1985. Men and women pray together at Masjid al-Farah; its services are led by a woman, Sheikha Fariha al-Jerrahi. The New York Times described it as €œamong the most progressive [mosques] in the city€ and €œa quintessentially New York combination of immigrants and native New Yorkers, traditionalists and spiritual seekers."

While a small number of Muslims embrace an idealized view of a €œpure€ Islam that prevailed in the seventh century, most of the world€™s Muslims are, to varying degrees, like €œcafeteria Catholics€ -- adhering to some teachings and ignoring others. On one extreme end of that spectrum are the followers of Osama bin Laden and his fellow travelers. On the other extreme are the people behind Park 51 (formerly known as Cordoba House), an Islamic community center that will feature art spaces, a theater, a gym and pool, and a mosque, or prayer space. The Park 51 people are as different from bin Laden's crowd as a Christian extremist who blows up an abortion clinic is distinct from a good Unitarian. That€™s what makes the contrived outrage over the project especially crazy.

Masjid al-Farah represents the open, tolerant face of modern Islam. This is the brand of Islam represented by the Cordoba Initiative, the organization behind Park 51; the site was chosen, according to the organizers, €œfor exactly what happened here on 9/11 and what America stands for.€ They added that the project €œis a victory of American tolerance over hatred.€

If not for virulent bigotry -- bigotry based on a profound ignorance of Islam and the Muslim world -- the whole thing would be a non-story, an eye-wateringly dull local zoning issue. The ignorance fueling this outpouring of hatred can only thrive because most Americans -- other than those who live in Dearborn, Michigan, parts of New York and New Jersey or Southern California -- have never met a Muslim, or wouldn't know it if they had.

There are fewer Muslims in the United States than there are Buddhists -- they represent only 0.6 percent of the population. Research into how the public views another vilified minority -- immigrants -- tells us that a little firsthand experience with the "Other€ goes a long way toward dispelling the cloud of falsehoods that cynical demagogues use to prey on people€™s fears and anxieties about that which is foreign. According to a Pew survey, citizens who live in areas with high concentrations of immigrants hold far more favorable views of their contribution to American society than do people who live in areas where there aren€™t many who were born elsewhere. It's not a matter of demographics or politics; the authors concluded that €œexposure to and experience with immigrants results in a better impression of them.€...

(Torurot @ Aug. 16 2010,01:05) But, God, I wish a real mosque at Ground Zero would happen, or even be proposed.
And I worked in the World Trade Center.

Building an interfaith center of peace loving Christians, Jews, and Muslims at Ground Zero sounds like a great idea to me.

However, the proposed cultural center, mosque whatever is not at Ground Zero, it's on private property a couple of minutes walk away. Good that the POTUS is not pandering to the lynch mob.

Will he be re-elected? To early to tell.

I think it was good that Paulson misled (sounds nicer than lied) Congress to prevent a worldwide economic colapse.

I don't think reflation is a good idea. It benefits banks and those who have mortgages at the expense of other citizens and segments of society. But that is the Feds call not Obama's.

Let home prices sink to market levels and get the pain over with.
Americans have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of hapiness which includies sucking ladyboy cock. Home ownership is not an inalienable right.

Unemployment is a problem. I would like to see the government put people to work at useful minimum wage jobs in lieu of extended unemployement benefits. Maybe something like FDR's Civilian Conservation Corps.

I personally wouldn't mind a little bit higher interest rates. They're rock bottom right now.

My savings account gives an interest rate of 0.12%. That's pathetic.
