This might be sacriledge but I haven't seen shawshank redemption, dead man walking or monster yet. Somehow I don't like prison movies.

I've seen none of them either. No rush to do so. The Green Mile, which paccy mentions, is kind of different though. I saw it once and it is worth seeing at least once.

Monster's Ball could also be considered a prison movie, in some aspects anyway. That is a movie I liked very well. Even considering it's ending, which reminded me of the way No Country for Old Men ended.

I don't think too many people would speaking negatively against what IMO is the ultimate prison movie...Cool Hand Luke. I know JD likes it a lot.

Then there is the prison classic, the remake of The Longest Yard, with JD's and my favorite actor, Adam Sandler.

And as to my rather succinct reply above about lefty's opinions, there are 2 kinds of opinions, one about preferences : "I really like women in prison movies" "I like vanilla more than chocolate"
etc.,..     It's all about taste & choice, no problemo.

But the other kind of opinion is about facts & thats where it does matter about what is right/wrong, otherwise Sarah Palin would be in Mensa & Stephen King would be taught in Lit classes instead of Nabokov. (Adjusting my cravat...) One is better than the other, but that doesn't mean we have to enjoy either one though.

Mass produced corporate product designed to appeal to teenage boys with spending cash, whether movies, fast food or music, usually isn't very good. Some of it can be great occasionally.

I just finished watching "Bitch Slap" and if you like some of the B-movies about hot chicks fighting and spitting out one liners then I highly reccomend it as it was funny,sexy, and just a really fun ride. One of the best lines is at the beginning when this guy says "You take orders better than a Bangkok Bum Boy!" The Ladies in this movie are hot as hell and there so much girl on girl action I actually got a Definitely one to check out as a modern day B-Movie classic. BTW I also just saw "Machete" yesterday and it is also good made by Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Once Upon a time in Mexico, El Mariachi,Sin City and Planet Terror) really a fun movie w/ plenty of Over the top action scenes.

Why is everyone forgetting the ULTIMATE "prison" flick:

The Great Escape???

It's the only prison film that I would rate higher than The Shawshank Redemption.

Funny you should mention that as I watched that film last night again for the 20th time at least I still love it though All star cast James Coburn, Charles Bronson,Donald Plesance, and of course the Man Steve McQueen as Virgil Hilts although as he states "Hilts just Hilts will do" The only thing I find peculiar about this movie is the fact that" How many really did escape? "I guess only a few as some were returned and 50 were shot(Fuck the Nazi's) Still all in all one of the best of all time all countries represented proudly. Thanks for mentioning this great film.

    Piggdogg I agree The Godfather is the best movie(and book) of all time the best version is The Godfather The Epic 1902-1959 a box set of GF 1and 2 put together in chronological order so no flashbacks just 7 hours of pure cinematic genius with many extra scenes included that didn't make the original screenings the only downside is it's only available on VHS not DVD so not as sharp as it could be but fuckit I still break out the old VHS player every 6 months or so to give it a watch Probably seen it 70+ times never get tired of it. P.S. read the book maybe 6 or 7 times as it includes things not in the movie Mario Puzo is a genius IMHO.

I agree, I'd LOVE to see it again as The Epic but I'll wait for a blu-ray reconstruction. I blathered on a while ago in another similar thread about watching the blu-ray restorations of Godfather 1 and 2. Amazing.

The only thing more amazing was Bumpa's admission that he's never seen and never plans to watch these.

I finally bought a copy in Smile and it is an excellent movie, I must admit.

I did a little research afterward and learned the first choice to play Andy was Tom Hanks, but he had a prior commitment with Forrest Gump. Kevin Costner was also wanted but he was busy making a truly awful movie IMO, Waterworld.

Thank the movie gods anyway that they both could not do it, because Tim Robbins was perfect as Andy.

It deserves it's #1 ranking on imdb.com

I can't believe I neglected to mention The Big Lebowski earlier in this thread, but that is one movie I could watch over dozens of times.
Easily an all time top ten for me. Very funny and very entertaining.

Lefty, glad you finally caught up with us regarding "The Shawshank Redemption".

I was at the theater this weekend ("Jackass 3D") and they showed a trailer for the new Cohen Brothers film coming out at Christmas - "True Grit" starring Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn and Matt Damon in the sidekick role (played by Glenn Campbell in the 1969 original). The original was the film that won John Wayne his only Oscar (Best Actor). I mention it because it was one of the seminal movie experiences I had as a child. 4 movies I can still recall that deeply affected me, mostly from the back seat of our family car at the local drive-in with my little sister and parents:

"You Only Live Twice" (1967). My first Bond film. It rocked my world. Also one of my earliest musical memories, along with The Beatles Abbey Road album a couple of years later. I still love the John Barry score and the theme song sung by Nancy Sinatra.

"True Grit" (1969). Made me a die-hard John Wayne fan, and again had a musical connection for me. I searched out the 45RPM single of the title song (by Glenn Campbell) at the local Value Mart on a Back-To-School shopping expedition with my mom. Only years later did I come to realize that the song "True Grit" was actually the b-side. The A side? "Wichita Lineman".

"Fantastic Voyage" (1966). I loved this nearly-forgotten sci-fi epic featuring Raquel Welch (who made a BIG impression on my 5-6 year old psyche) and Donald Pleasance.

"In The Heat of the Night" (1967). Sidney Poitier classic about crime and racism in the deep south in the late 60's.
