The old saying is that you can't choose your family; and while that is true of course, most of us including myself are happy with the one we have been given; for the most part.  Friends; well, they  come and go, I have not even one left from high school or college, and only 4 or 5 good friends I have met in the past 20 years or so who I actually enjoy spending my time with.

But family, well they are always around when you peek your head back into the family homestead or hometown every few years or every few months, and the interaction is not always pleasant.   And that makes us realize why we spend so much time on the road!

Got a nice-enough Mum, she means well and has a good heart; but man does she make me crazy with all the questions and constant phone calls. I am pushing the 1/2 century mark, but still get almost daily ''check-ins'' when I am home to see if I am OK or to hear about what just happened at bridge or michigan rummy or with the book club.  Once a week or even once a month would be fine, thank you.

Irish family, so 8 brothers and sisters [true] and also many cousins and many nieces and nephews and now great-nieces, etc....probably 45 of us all told. Of course of that number I only stay in contact with 5 or 6, the ones only in or near my city and who I am closest to in age and interests.  My brothers and sisters are cool, but what's with the constant back-stabbing and mean-spirited comments about the others?  And, what are they saying about ME when I am not around?

It's pretty maddening, really...I've been home exactly 2 weeks now after 4 months on the road and it never ends; So-and so telling me crap about X; Y telling me shit about Z; Mum telling me stuff about everyone and then they telling me stuff about Mum; some of it really mean-spirited, some of it just plain annoying; all of it really just boring ....and frankly, I just plain don't care about 99% of it!

You can't choose your family, but you CAN travel a lot and only deal with them via e-mail; better.

We just picked up our cat from the hospital after a three day internment. It was very sick but seems to be slowly getting on the mend. We now have it isolated in the spare room where it can relax and get better. It'll take about two weeks...

Just got our Honda Wave last Saturday and I have been busy riding it round the estate annoying the neighbors and frightening the kids. Fantastic fun.

Went for a swim earlier with Olay. The pool is usually closed on a Monday but that didn't stop us! Beautiful and warm.

Ate at home today - unusual for us...

I had fish fingers, beans and mashed potatoes and Olay had pork ribs, smoked salmon and lots of rice. (That smoked salmon is expensive but it's so delicious...)

Olay is downstairs watching soaps and I'm up here watching the markets in the UK plunge 1%!

Our family is a nightmare, too so I feel your pain, bro'!

One of my Uncle's had 10 kids

I get along 'ok' with my family, but most of the sniping relates to short memory syndrome. i.e now that all my brothers and sisters are older and 'wiser' and some have kids of their own, they suddenly start to appreciate how hard my Mum had to do it raising a family on her own. Of course when they were kids they took it all for granted like selfish brats..then they try to 'lecture' others with their new found wisdom and maturity

My Mum is ok, but sometimes when she calls I just let it go to the machine. But I remember you saying you found it hard to say 'No' JaiDee

          What's her name ? Any pics ?

Seriously though, using the machine is a means of being in control of communications, with family or otherwise. Not the other way round. It's part of the 'Say No' culture. I decide.

What did we do before voicemail? I have managed to outlive most of my immediate family there being some benefit to coming along as an "afterthought".
I do have an elderly Aunt who calls me in the UK from her house in Vancouver BC - she never has managed to suss the time difference between us so is always surprised when her opening question of "what were you doing?" is answered with "sleeping" the last time she said I spend too much time asleep. If only that were true!!!!

As usual, words of wisdom from Uncle KH

I know I would miss some of my family members, and in fact I am quite close with 2 of my brothers and one of my sisters; the others are all scattered throughout the USA and I barely see them. I have 2 nieces from my closest-in-age brother, ages 28 and 30; we are VERY close and I love 'em to death; in fact hanging with them makes me feel young again, and now they each have little grand-nieces whom I can play with and spoil; that's all good.

What I DON'T like is how family members feel like they can use me as a sounding board, even the ones I am close with;  it's like, ''well JD has been gone for 4 months, so lets lay all our family problems off on HIM since he hasn't heard them yet''.  Ugghhhh.

I see my brothers fighting with their wives {30 years, imagine what that'll do to you?} about the most nit-picky shit possible.  I hear about what each family member is doing and usually with a little jab against each; nothing mean-spirited but jabs nonetheless and again that reminds me; what are they saying about ME when I am traveling?

Family is a strange dynamic... they drive you nuts when they are around, but as KH says you'll  miss 'em when they are gone.

WTF is a grinder? Is that what New England chowder heads call a hamburger?

Just guessing here so maybe way off base.

Very true Uncle Big Kahuna Burger.

Me same you...sort of. Not much family left that I maintain contact with. Cousins and such could keep in touch with me as easy as I do with them. So after a while I got tired of being the one doing 90% of the maintaining contact.

You can pick your friends but you can't pick your family. I've had several friends over the years who I've been closer to than most anyone of my family. My best friends in this world I trust more than any family member.

a grinder is what I think we more civilized people call a "sub", although

shockingly enough, in parts of Vermont, I've seen them sold as "Italians",

try explaining that in parts of the East Coast.
Life is short. Live it well.

Ya, a sub for me and Kev, but a grinder in Patriotland. Someparts of the country it's a hero.

But the best, and it's really a whole different, animal are muffelettas (sic)from Nawlins.

And soft drinks are soda to us.
