  • Communist Canadian Health Care System

I have read some bashing of the Canadian health care system by some of the supporters of the current US system that has over 3 million uninsured people, and has big health insurance companies dictating how people should be treated instead of the doctors.

Well, I just would like to share my personal experience of how this terrible communist system with long waiting lists worked for my family.

At 3:00 am March 19, my father had a lot of bleeding from his rectum when he went to the bathroom. My mom woke me up and I called 911 to get the paramedics. They arrived in 10 minutes. They took my father to the hospital about 15 minutes away. He was admitted to the emergency room, where a dr. saw him in 40 minutes. He determined that my father was stable, and called for the gastroeneterology service to see him. They came by in about 2 hrs, and arranged for a colonoscopy to be done in the afternoon at around 4:30 pm. They did the procedure and cauterized the section of the colon to stop it bleeding and also found a polyp which was also removed and sent for testing to determine if it is cancerous.

I took him back home around 6:30 pm and he is now resting comfortably, but a bit weak from loss of blood and the procedure.

Did you notice something in all this? All we had to take was his Provincial Health Insurance card in and no cost for anything. All Canadian residents have health care and are able to receive treatment when it is needed without worrying about whether the private insurance company will cover it, or some in other countries having no insurance and wondering how to pay the bill.

There will be some who say look at the example of Danny Williams the premier of Newfoundland. He went to the US because the procedure that was recommended by his dr. was not available in Canada. If it was available he would have had the procedure done in Canada.

We don't have to worry about increased insurance premiums if a serious illness occurs, like cancer or that insurance is lost because of unemployment.

This is not to say our system is perfect - it can be improved, but neither is it the EVIL communist system that some would like to proclaim.

Don't worry rxpharm the only people who think your system is evil are rubes, mouth-breathing apes dressed as dumb rednecks. And who gives a fuck what they think?

I agree and I'd love for the USA wake up and adopt Canada's health care system.

      Thanks for sharing that RXPharm!!!

(rxpharm @ Mar. 20 2010,10:54) I have read some bashing of the Canadian health care system by some of the supporters of the current US system that has over 3 million uninsured people, and has big health insurance companies dictating how people should be treated instead of the doctors.
3 million uninsured? I am sure a figure between 40 & 50 million uninsured was quoted here on TV.

No health cover for the citizens of any country is disgraceful but for the "richest economy in the world" it is shocking.

And just how does the introduction of a right like free Public Health Care suddenly change a fiercely democratic nation into a Socialist state?

Blimey! Talk about whipping up mass hysteria.

Here in Oz, we have free health care & no one could ever accuse us of being a communist country. Not like those Canadians & Kiwis...
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

The term 'socialized medicine' or 'socialized health care' carries a stigma in the USA.

You can blame the government who have brainwashed their kids into thinking that a capitalist democracy is the way God would choose.

But putting the indoctrination of citizenry aside, the health care system in the US still functions... and we should be greatful that it does!

The reason that the world has most of the procedures and machines and medicines and options available to them is that the USA alone has covered the costs of investments in them by charging for health care.

Please don't tell me that pharmaceutical companies would have gone to all this trouble to invest in and create drugs without the Americans to pay for them.

The hospital machines that we all take for granted around the world today would not be available at all if the Americans hadn't paid a very high price for them in the past.

The Canadian system works for Canadians. The UK system works for the UK and in America their system works for them.

But let's be clear - the global advances of health care, drugs and health care machines have all come from the 'pay as you get sick' system in USA.

Pacman, thanks that was a typo as I didn't have much sleep when I posted - it is over 30 million - something like 33 million who are uninsured.

I fear this will never be the case in the USA.  Hell, we are having a hard enough time just getting this lame health care bill passed for the poor, just so Obama can keep his campaign promises; I doubt in my lifetime we will EVER see it for all Americans, same as in Canada or the UK, Sweden, etc..... AKA  "The rest of the civilized world".

Which is just part of the reason I am moving away from this place full-time in a few years.

Thanks for the story, RX ........IMO you guys are lucky up there. And good luck to your Dad.

The biggest thing that is keeping me at my job (for another 15 years!) is my fear of losing health care here in the US. All other issues, such as finances and housing seem solvable and worth the risk - but not health care. It is so unfortunate here. That said, as long as I can keep doing what I am doing, my health care is quite good. This is why a number of my workmates are not in favor of any changes - they don't want to risk losing what they have. I still favor health care for all even if it is, God forbid, "Socialist" or, even worse "Communist" What a crock of horseshit over here. An absolute embarrassment. We can still have a capitalist democracy and a health care system that works. We have one now that can be improved and expanded - Medicare.
I am glad that things worked out with your Dad. Rocky

Yeah hope your Dad is OK rx.

Back in Australia there is a pretty good system. Sure it's not perfect...waiting lists for 'elective' surgery...not always 'your' choice of Doctor or surgeon etc etc..but at least if you're really ill, or if it's an emergency. no one asks to see your wallet first

Regular visits to a General Practicioner are 'bulk-billed' in most cases (i.e you don't fork out any cash) and those on any kind of benefit (ok, let the socialist flaming begin..) have acces to subsidised prescriptions.. i.e very cheap.

Like I said, it's not perfect but then again our view of Health Care is not dictated by any ideological preconceptions. It's just a basic right in a decent society.

Why else does one pay taxes ?

I still cant believe the richest country in the world would treat its people like this. Here in Ireland the healthcare system is pretty damn easy. If your unemployed its free, but free to you. Someone has to pay for it and thats the government/taxpayer which is the way it should be. I dont by that bullshit that the money made off Americans health insurance is solely used to further medical research worldwide. Healthcare is always paid for, its just a question of who picks up the tab.

A perfect example on how the American healthcare system is seriously flawed is this. Recently we seen an operation in Afghanistan to take the town of Marjah and surrounding areas. General McCrystal coined the term Governance in a box. They go in, and set up local government, build schools and provide healthcare to the locals, in an effort to win hearts and minds. Now do you think the locals are asked do they have health insurance, of course not, its all free to them. Although its limited some healthcare is still provided and its the american tax payer who is paying for it. Something is seriously wrong with a country when they will pay for the healthcare of people 10,000km away and not there own people who need it.

I can accept that comment as a sweeping generalisation but US drug companies have crossed a line in acting against the public interest in keeping alternative cures out of US hospitals.

This goes way beyond things like homeopathics, etc. Through their political lobbying, they use the FDA to ban simple things like certain amino acids, enzymes & even some vitamins to name a few.

I can't be specific which ones are barred but I was shocked when I saw the list of things that we take for granted here in Oz that can only be imported into the US.

The manufacturers of these "dangerous" alternatives were forced to relocate their factories in Mexico. Against overwhelming evidence that some of these things are very efficacious, the major drug companies fight to keep them out of the US.

Hence you have the absurd situation where important Americans who need specialised treatment for cancer for example, are sent to Germany where all the ridiculed products & practices can be used to cure these special patients.

Ronald Reagan's bowel cancer comes to mind. Germany's famous father of alternative treatments was enticed out of retirement to oversee his case, then he went to the US to teach Reagan's doctors how to follow up his treatment.

The FDA didn't speak up then. And Reagan was only one of many, his high profile makes him easy to remember.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.
