USA (Live). For years Fripp refused to release this on CD saying it wasn't the best available...then released several box sets of Crimso live performances..just a marketing move... (More on another Fripp collaboration later).

Softs is probably the most 'approachable' Soft Machine record.

Bruford was the drummer in arguably the best Crimso lineup (73-74 see above). He released this solo album after the breakup. Drummer's albums are usually a wank. Not this one. Alan Holdsworth on guitar.

I think a very interesting and no doubt controversial thread would be : Who produced the best bands/music...USA or UK ?

(JaiDee @ Feb. 23 2010,11:39) Zappa was awesome......great arranger and also a great guitarist.

Maybe he was Trent Reznor's dad?
          Haha...quite possibly JaiDee..

          Yes Zappa had it all..

Soon to follow my 'Prog Rock' selections...

I'm off to listen to Stinkfoot.....
God I love Zappa,I'm glad so many have mentioned him. Also died last year JIMMY CARL BLACK,who was his drummer in the Mothers for years.Jimmy ended up singing with a liverpool based Zappa tribute band called THE MUFFIN MEN-anyway-albums-What about "joe's Garage" probably Uncle Franks masterpiece.

            Yes to both questions.

Maybe not the most influencial album however every Saturday Night at 12midnight  WMMS (cleveland ohio)  radio station played this song for many years and a lot of us tuned in every week to listen.

                  Maggot Brain (Funkadelic)
Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time
For y'all have knocked her up.
I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe
            I was not offended
For I knew I had to rise above it all
Or drown in my own shit.

            Come on Maggot Brain
            Go on Maggot Brain

Why do all the interesting threads start when I'm on holiday

To echo one of Naang's earlier pics -The Whos Quadrophenia stands out for me .

In the mid 80's as a kid of 17 I lived this album and the mod lifestyle 24/7

I had my first job , money in my pocket , I'd discovered clubs, bars and girls .
I'd discovered 60's soul music and bought my first scooter , a Vespa 100cc covered in chrome .

Belfast in the mid 80s was a shit place to live , but me and my friends thought we were a million miles from all that shit and the mod lifestyle was the ultimate escape .

We wore tailor made suits and shirts , fought running battles with the skins , rode around on scooters singing "Can you see the real me " and "5.15" .

The best time of my life , this album captured how I felt at that time

Pixies - Doolittle , the best band of the late 80s , early nineties .

Nirvana my arse , Kurt Cobain spent his time trying to copy them .

                        Gentlemen,

Just the albums mentioned so far would be the basis for an interesting and eclectic collection...

                          Gentlemen,

Oh Dear God! Why has no one mentioned Sgt. Pepper's?! NO album meets the initilly-stated criterion of "music-changing, fashion-changing, life-changing albums, the best ones of all time" better than Sgt. Pepper's...

                            Gentlemen,

I came to an appreciation for jazz in general and Miles Davis in particular long after my British Invasion-driven love for rock 'n roll had fully bloomed, but I fell hard for both.

Many critics consider "Kind of Blue" the greatest jazz album of all time.

                              Gentlemen,

I will add just one more - a point of personal preference since I attended Gainesville (FL) High School with the artist. Picked the breakthrough third album "Damn the Torpedos" as a stand-in for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' entire Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame career. Enjoy!
