    Late night talk show wars

    Those of you who live in the states or watch the US Late night talk shows are aware of what is happening right now. NBC in an effort to save money moved Jay Leno to "primetime" and put Conan O' Brien in his "Tonight Show" time spot. Well the Leno experiment tanked and NBC tried to get Conan to approve a move to 12:05 AM EST time slot which he refused to comply with and to put Leno back in at 11:35 PM.

    Take note that the switch put Letterman's ratings above the Tonight show for the first time ever also

    This caused a major feud that became the fodder for the opening monolouges on all the talk shows and now it looks like Conan is going to receive a 30 million dollar buyout for bringing the ratings down on a 7 month job.

    Question is who do you watch or who do you prefer of the late night talk show hosts

    Definitely David! I like his 'student' style humor.

    Jay Leno is an unfunny, fawning, obsequious turd, Conan O Brian simply isn't funny... even if he waits a month between each gag hoping for a laugh! Kimmel should have stuck to his football gig on Fox and there's a Scottish bloke who I can't understand but hey... what happened to Arsenio Hall?

    David has lost his edge but still outshines that crop of hasbeens and wannabees...

    Fuck, I miss Carson.

      I prefer Leno's monologues to Letterman, but like Letterman's top 10 lists.

        Through the wonder of cable TV I used to watch Jay Leno often. He was on at 8.30pm here, a far more sensible time than 11.30 (I can't believe that timeslot enjoys strong ratings in the US, it is very much a graveyard time here).

        I liked his idiosyncratic style, some of the distinctly American touches on his show had me reaching for the remote but he was occasionally funny & a likeable bloke.

        Then I came across Conan. However his promoters want to spin it, he was a jerk of the highest order. I was told it helped to be a New Yorker, they get his style of humour. I was also told the same thing about Letterman. I doubt all New Yorkers love them entirely.

        When Jay announced on his show that he had 5 more years before he handed over to his natural succesor - Conan - I thought that was the end of that program.

        I have seen very little of Conan hosting the Tonight show such is my aversion to his antics. That plus I have rid the house of cable.

        Now NBC think they can unscramble the eggs by switching Jay back to the Tonight show & start again. All I can say to that idea is "good luck". To think they pay high-priced executives to come up with these hair brained suggestions.

        Jay is stale, so stale, when he had the perfect opportunity to re-invent himself, he clung onto his old formula in the foolish notion that would work forever.

        Conan deserves to disappear but he may bounce back. Letterman will continue on till he retires, with no apparent opposition in the US. UNBELIEVABLE!!!

        But he will do it without me, I have discovered someone more entertaining than all of them. Genuinely funny with the best retort lines ever, I will stick with Graham Norton. No current host comes close IMO.
        Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

          Letterman is by far the best of the current crop......I never liked Leno,  I don't think he's funny at all and he is WAY too obvious in reading his cue cards.  yes, they all do it, but it takes skill to not be SEEN doing it and he never mastered that.

          His only good bit ever was the 'Jay-walking' segment..... that used to be good if for no other reason than to see just how stupid the average person walking down the street could actually be.

            Johnny......for sure the best of our generation....fucking greatness, his dry humor and self-deprecation kept me in stitches for years.  I remember when he was retiring and NBC had to pick between Leno and Letterman; man, was david pissed when he didn't get that gig which he so coveted.

           Who is getting the last laugh now??

            Letterman by a landslide, never liked Jay Leno - just an unfunny guy.
            I like Conan, but would always pick Letterman over him.

                I don't like any of those clowns. I don't think any of them are funny and I don't understand what all the fuss is about.
                I don't care about these people. They could all disappear tomorrow and it would make absolutely no difference to me.

                  anybody but Leno IMO. He is awful in every sense of the word. Not funny at all. Looks stupid with his oversized chin thing he has going on. His monologues seem to me like he is just reading a script, whereas Letterman's monologues come across to me like his own original thoughts.

                  I also find Jimmy Kimmel to be very funny. I've enjoyed him since The Man Show.

                  I liked George Lopez' sitcom he had a few yrs ago, but never saw him yet in a talk show format. Since he reminds me of a very funny friend back home with some of his expressions, I suspect I'd enjoyed Geo as a talk show host too.

                    I didn't read your thoughts on Leno before posting mine, but you're pretty much spot on IMO. Since we agree.

                    I remember before Carson retired, Leno and Garry Shandling were the most frequent guest hosts. I was really wishing Shandling would have gotten The Tonight Show gig after Johnny. To me, Shandling was a very funny guy and I was very disappointed to see Leno taking over.

                      I HATE NBC!!! That network is run by fools of the highest order. i wish all NBC execs would die!!! Especially whomever pulled the plug on the best sitcom since Seinfeld. That being My Name is Earl. Stupid stupid people and you can't fix stupid. May as well knock 'em in the head and feed them to Bricktop's hogs.

                        3 of the funniest words I ever heard were said by this guy; on Bill Maher one time he was on the panel with Arianna Huffington, who was babbling on and on in that ex-soviet bloc accent of hers ....Shandling had a confused look on his face and was looking at her through the whole spiel..... when she finally finished he says to her; " are you legal?"

                        Never laughed so hard, Maher cracked up also and Arianna even had a chuckle.

                          I always thought Shandling was the master of the deadpan delivery. Used to love Maher on late night and wish I'd seen that episode.

                            Leno is horribly unfunny. Conan should speak to me being that I'm his target demographic, but I've always been a fan of David Letterman.
