  • Geeks - It's YOUR time to shine/whine!

    Hello. My name is Rusty and I'm a Geek.

    Here's the thread where other geeks just like me get to whine about fucking idiots who can't use their PCs or gadgets or cameras!

    It's that time of year when Geeks are most needed. The gadgets coming out of Christmas stockings will need tweaking and fixing so the idiot owners can actually use them! It's the time of year when you are suddenly on call to everyone you know to kick start their sorry asses into the 21st century. It's the time of year when everyone blames YOU for the internet breaking or their hard drive needing or more RAM!

    I've been mucking around with computers for a long time now. I used to assemble them for a living and flog them on for good dosh. I've built up a resistance to the silliness I come across but still somethings bloody annoy me!

    Here are some of them...

    People who double click on links when they are browsing the internet.

    People who don't allow their computers to fully boot up before they start trying to use it.

    People who don't take any notes when I am showing them the steps of a procedure that they'll need to know.

    People who download these pesky 'search' tool bars which are next to impossible to remove.

    I've got a load more... how about my fellow GEEKS out there?
    I'm feeling rough and it's a combination of air and water...

            tons of stories on the net

               * Customer: "I am getting a 'Page Cannot Be Displayed' message."
               * Tech Support: "Ok, let's try our home page."
               * Customer: "That worked."
               * Tech Support: "Ok, let's try another page like www.cnn.com."
               * Customer: "That worked too."
               * Tech Support: "I don't see any problems then."
               * Customer: "Well I tried that page I was trying, and it did it again."
               * Tech Support: "What's the site's address?"
               * Customer: "(address).com."
               * Tech Support: "Hmmm. It looks like the site is down."
               * Customer: "Yeah, I know it is. Can you fix it now, please?"
               * Tech Support: "It's not one of our sites, so we can't fix it."
               * Customer: "What do you mean you can't fix it? You are my Internet provider. You should be able to fix it."
               * Tech Support: "No, we cannot. We do not own that site."
               * Customer: "Let me speak to your supervisor. You're just stupid and trying to brush me off."

                        I read about this tip from the old days of film cameras and it works for the new DSLRs as well. Set your aperture to f5.6 - f8.0, prefocus to the area where the fireworks will be going off. Set your shutter to "B" bulb - use a cable release to lock the shutter open. Use a piece of paper hold in front of lens (assuming you have the camera on a tripod), and open the shutter with the cable release keeping it locked open. Remove the paper from the front of the lens, for whatever length of time you wish to capture various firework bursts. Then close the shutter. Multiple bursts in the same spot will probably over expose, so closing down the aperture may be necessary.
