New Orleans is probably my favorite city.

One consideration is picking a location without a state and city income tax.
Living in New York City you'll probably lose 10% of your income to the taxman.

Seven states have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Two others, New Hampshire and Tennessee, tax only dividend and interest income.

    From this list:

Memphis, Tennessee is centrally located, just about everything sent via Fedex goes thru there, as well as being a fun city.  Hot and humid in the summer but mild winters.  Nashville, Tennesee is the country western music capital of the world.

    Las Vegas has flights everywhere.

Lots of good locations in Florida.

Austin Texas and Seattle Washington have their fans too but I've never been to either place.

Here's state income tax rates but cities can take a bite out of your check.
You don't want to live in a crappy place just cause there's no tax but state/city taxes are not a trivial consideration.

San Diego without a doubt. Perfect. But then you have to factor in air travel. Each city may or may not have as short or direct flights as others. Just depends where you will be traveling; such as big cities or small cities, mainly one region or spread everywhere, etc.

Beahcfront condo in Ft Lauderdale - done it and loved it even though I was then moved almost straight away to Singapore. Other option would be South Beach Miami.

Maybe Seattle but I have not been there. Chicago if your down town has some great lakeside places. Chicago is very liveable city as well. Personally I think the US does water really well (i.e intracoastals, lakes, coatss etc)- hence my suggested places.

As a totally way out idea - Scottsdale has a lot going for it if you can stand the heat (Phoenix itself is a bit of a dump).

              Sounds like a good opportunity.

              Cheers

Funny Kevin and I thought the same!! Seriously mate, if you will be spending a lot of time on planes you had better not pick an airport that doesnt have a large legacy carrier (or two) as it will be TWO legs at least and that a pain the the arse to put it mildly. Stogie made a nice suggestion-Denver. I never say the attraction but I aint the outdoorsey type.

6 mo apartment and condo rentals are easy everywhere. Pick someplace nice for the summer (Minneapolis, Chicago, New York, Denver, Salt Lake City, etc) then someplace nice in the winter (San Diego, etc.)

                              Or Salt Lake City

I do like to ski yes.

Denver is a place I really did not think about too much but has been recommended by 3 or 4 people already.

Thanks for all the great input. I have a couple of months to decide.
