(manarak @ Nov. 07 2009,21:08) Denmark, haha... Denmark...

theres now a tax there on fat food. Butter now costs 30% more.
    Hadn't noticed but.....

    In contrast to robbo's experience

Waited 6 weeks to see a specialist, had surgery 4 days later!

That's what socialistic solidarity systems produce: coercion, less liberties.
I think I'll take the less liberties please

As an Aussie who lived in the UK last year I was surprised how well the NHS worked. I was working there and therefore paying taxes but didn't expect to see the Doc for free as I'm not a citizen..... Great system.

      did anybody bother reading this?
this is very much what is  wrong with the uk NHS,can i just walk into any other place and get free medical............mostly flat fuckin no!
somebody somewhere paid  high taxes for your treatment, its why the cost of living in the UK is out of control, its all fucked up.nobody should get med treatment unless they pay for it or show uk citizenship..........simple.
So all foreigners working in the UK should pay taxes for the privilege of subsidising you?

AND you forgot to blame the muslims!

TomScam said "NZ doesn't have free healthcare, much like US."

NZ health care is largely free and is NOTHING like US health care. If you are "hit by the bus" in NZ it won't cost you a cent. ACC (Accident Compensation Commission) takes care of that.. You would have to go a long way to find a New Zealander who would swap their system with anything the US offers.

Note to all the TomSam detractors, he said "As an Aussie who lived in the UK last year I was surprised how well the NHS worked. I was working there and therefore paying taxes but didn't expect to see the Doc for free as I'm not a citizen..... Great system."

In other words paying taxes qualified him for the free treatment!

            what a beautiful idea.

i get pissed off when people smoke all their lives, or become clinically obese, and then expect the medical profession to help them.
id tell them to fuck off.

Geeez this has certainly brewed up a storm.

Thanks Torurot for reminding everyone that I was paying taxes like everyone else. Therefore I can't see how everyone else was subsidising my one visit to the doctor. I agree that only citizens should get free healthcare, that's why I said that I was surprised that I was never hit with a bill.

Robbo looks like he's getting shitty with me because I got free treatment. Well mate, I did pay taxes so does that count for anything? I actually believe that I contributed more than I took because I worked in a shitty High School in south London that no pom wanted to work in and hence filled a gap. Actually, about half the staff at the school weren't from the UK because no one else wanted to go there. Should these people who are paying tax not get anything in return for looking after your shitty kids? (can't say the name of the place but it was like something similar to the "Dangerous Minds" movie)

I saw loads of permanent immigrants (unlike myself) who were coming to the UK with nothing much to contribute and I often wondered how the home population felt. I agree that the UK system should be tightened up somewhat and I can understand that people get angry when non-citizens get free healthcare through the NHS. I would have happily paid if asked but such is the UK system that this was never an issue. I hope that the Aussie Govt returns the favour to all the UK people who come here to even the balance.

Torurot, I am probably mistaken but I was under the impression that the NZ system wasn't free. The reason is I have a number a kiwi mates who have told me that there is no bulk-billing (free) doctors in NZ and that the system is private. Is this wrong?
I have only been to NZ once but never used the doctors service there.

The answer is "depends". It's nothing like the US system that causes ill people to become bankrupt or untreated due to no insurance etc.

A mixture of public/private. It's not that complex.

If you went to the doctor because you had a sniffle or a spot on your arm it would cost between $16-100 depending on the doctor, but if you sliced your finger (accident),, fell off your mountain bike (accident) got piled in a rugby scrum and hurt your back (accident), injured at work (or home) then free. ACC

All surgery (hospital) apart from cosmetic free unless you want to go to a private hospital. Waiting list, probably unless urgent/life threatening.

Health is a bottomless pit and everyone wants it now.

In the USA I'm one of the lucky few...I'm eligible for health care through the
Veterans Administration...which has many hospitals and clinics throughout the
United States staffed by dedicated doctors and other medical practitioners...

It's certainly not perfect, but it is either very inexpensive or free...But most importantly
it is a shining example that it could work here on a much larger scale...

That's why we don't want or need National Health Care in the US. It's just socialism to erode our freedoms. We need to keep our freedom to live under a bridge, in a tent city or a van down by the river, after massive unpaid medical bills cause us to go broke. Besides we can't be spending that kind of money at home when we got wars to fight. I'm sure most all US citizens are pleased to forgo NHC so we can take care of liberating downtrodden oppressed foreigners like the Iraqis. It's worth the high medical costs just for the warm feeling we get inside when we get to see Jeffersonian Democracy shoved down their throats.

I totally agree. Good stuff Anthony.

Smokers though, we all know are the bravest souls amongst us. Shit fuck, anyone can quit smoking, but it take a real man to willingly face lung cancer. Emphysema looks like a blast too. But I'm sure well worth it in exchange for the years of pleasure sitting around with your friends looking cool while holding real live fire near to your face and sucking noxious fumes into your lungs.

But I guess I need to just resign myself to the fact that smoking is some people's ingrained habit. For me, it is farting. And it is nice because there are no places yet where farting is illegal. I know farting is bad for me, and I do try to quit. I quit for a year once, but I gained a lot of weight. I know too that after sex, I really get the urge to light one up. This is especially fun for your partner if you have been eating a lot of beans not long before. Hold that bic down there close while laying on your back with your legs pulled back, and flick your bic just as you let one rip. A great way to entertain friends at parties too. Another fun way farting can ingratiate you with your friends, is let a big one build up, then get the smallest least physical person of the group either in a bear hug or pinned in the corner, so he can't escape, then cut loose. After he stops gagging and feeling the urge to puke, you can all share a good hearty laugh about it.

WASHINGTON - Triumphant Democrats passed landmark health care legislation in the House late Saturday night, spurred by a summons from
President Barack Obama to "answer the call of history" and expand coverage to millions who lack it.

The final vote was a narrow 220-215. Only one Republican €” Rep. Joseph Cao of Louisiana €” voted for the measure; 39 Democrats voted against it.
