  • Irelands solution

This is a letter from the Irish government sent out to people over the age of 40 who have lost there jobs due to the financial crisis.

    Dear Constituent,

Following on from The McCarthy Report and going forward the government has taken immediate remedial steps which are to implemented with immediate effect.

Due to the current financial situation caused by the slowdown of the economy, your Government has decided to implement a scheme to put workers of 40 years of age and older on early retirement. This scheme will be known as RAPE (Retire Aged People Early).

Persons selected to be RAPED can apply to the government to be eligible for the SHAFT scheme (Special Help After Forced Termination).

Persons who have been RAPED and SHAFTED will be reviewed under the SCREW program (Scheme Covering Retired Early Workers). A person may be Raped once, SHAFTED twice and SCREWED as many times as the Irish government deems appropriate.

Only persons who have been RAPED can get AIDS (Additional Income for Dependants & Spouse) or HERPES (Half Earnings for Retired Personnel Early Serverance). Obviously, persons who have AIDS or HERPES will not be SHAFTED or SCREWED any further by the government.

Persons who are not RAPED and are staying on, will receive as much SHIT (Special High Intensity Training) as possible. The government has always prided itself in the amount of SHIT it gives out. Should you feel that you do not receive enough SHIT, please bring this to the attention to your local elected politician. They have been trained to give you all the SHIT you can handle.

    Best Wishes
    Brian Cowen, T.D.
    An Taoiseach

You know socalists. If the people don't vote for you the people are wrong. The irony is it's looking as though the first EU president is probably going to be the English Tony Blair. Still at least the Irish government was kind enough to give the people a choice (and if they didn't like it you keep voting till you get the "correct" decision). Only country in the EU to do so. Everyone else had the decision made on their behalf. The Lisbon treaty ain't Irelands fault and I can understand in tough economic times everyone loves a sugar daddy but it would have been great had the no vote won -again.

If things had gone right the first time, you wouldn't hear a thing about it, but when we voted NO the first time, there was uproar when it came out that members of the Government hadn't even read the treaty.

In Ireland's case, there have been changes that the irish people wanted and they are now in the Lisbon treaty. and with the recession people were afraid to vote against the treaty, in case more jobs were lost, European funding would have been stopped and worse of all Europe would have made things very difficult for irish exports and travel.

Tomcat, it is hard to explain how these things happen, but at this moment in time Ireland realised that it needed Europe more than ever, as we have proved that we can't run our own country ourselves in a proper way.

I voted yes the first time round, and again this time. The last time when the irish people rejected it, it was for 3 reasons. No1 reason was concerns raised on key points in the treaty. No2 the no campaign ran by the people opposed to the treaty was very strong. No3 the government expected the irish people to vote yes and made a shambles of there yes campaign, and what Seanbeag pointed out, our leader admitted that he never even read the treaty which didnt give the irish people much confidence in the yes campaign.

What Tomcat says about the EU being bullshit, and not being democratic. Thats not true. The irish people voted no because of certain issues, so the EU resolved those key iessues. I call that democracy at work.

Another point I'd like to raise is, who says vote yes. All the main political parties in Ireland say vote yes. Fiannafail, fiannagael, labour and the green party. The only main party to say vote no is Seinfein. How many people who voted no would actually vote for Seinfein. My local Seinfein politician spent time in prison for trying to blow up a british gun boat in carlingford lough. I wouldnt vote for a terrorist in a second.

All the big employers said vote yes aswell, all the unions, the farmer federation. The list goes on. The no campaign really pissed me off aswell. It was full of lies from start to finish.

Looking at the results now, and only 2 areas have rejected the treaty, and surprise surprise, there in Donegal which would be a Seinfein area, and they all marry there cousins too.

              Democracy...ha ha

Gimme a break , the people of the UK voted for a Economic Union and now we find ourselves in a Polical Union... the people were lied to in the UK

From what i gather the un Elected EU Commision are the guys writing the laws.. who the fuck voted for them...ill tell you... Nobody!. Or prove me wrong .

It will go the same way as the Soviet Union did... you cannot patch together a quilt of 27 different Countries and expect it to last..

It wont last ... dont take my word for it though!

Your making this stuff up as you go along. The UN has nothing to do with electing EU commissioners. Each member state puts forward there own nominee for the role of an EU commissioner. Although the people of each member state dont vote for this person, the government that the people elected make that decision for them. Not the UN. But your right about the EU commission writing the laws of the EU and its member states, but those laws, and this is in the Lisbon treaty, cannot change a member states own constitution. The UK didnt get a chance to vote on the Lisbon treaty because it wasnt required by UK law as it didnt change anything. But in Irish law, any change to the Irish constitution has to be put to public vote.

The Lisbon treaty is all about changing how the EU is run. Like right now, each member state has a EU commissioner and if the treaty is passed only 18 out of the 27 member states will have a commissioner, but that will rotate evenly between each state. Each term for a commissioner, put forward by each member state, will be 5 years. The way it will work out is, your country will have a commissioner 10 years out of every 15.

The information is out there, you just got to do abit of reading up about it.

But I think your right about it not lasting Tomcat. If they let Turkey join the EU it will only be a matter of how and when. I mean come on, would you like the EU to border Iraq?

Also any country can leave the EU at anytime. If the UK ever vote for the BNP you will see that happen in a fortnight.

So if you dont like Europe, vote BNP

Well that ain't true , my views are a million miles from the BNP and I still wouldn't vote for Europe .

Tomcat is correct , the Irish people rejected this treaty 16 months ago only to be told to go back to get the right decision with a gun put to their heads ........

                    So much for democracy eh

I wonder how many yes votes there would be if every country could have a vote

I havent heard of people been forced to vote yes at gun point. Thats the same kinda talk the no campaign used. Posters saying, "irelands neutrality" and saying nothing else. The treaty in no way effects Irelands neutrality. Always using buzz words, and not actually explaining anything.

Ireland voted no the first time, because of some key issues, and those key issues were resolved this time round, its called democracy.

If they had a questionaire about the Lisbon treaty at each polling station last time, and each voter had to get a certain amount of the questions right to cast a vote, it would of been voted in the last time, cause most of the people who voted no hadnt got a clue what it was about.

Anyone who counts for anything in Ireland said vote yes, all the major employers, all the unions, all the main political parties, except Seinfein. Not much the same in the UK. David Cameron is against it, but I always get the feeling from him, that he would go against anything Labour being the main oppostion.

If rattified it wont come into effect until 2014 anyway.

I voted No twice now, and now it means nothing, I just hope the Czeck and Polish people delay the out-come for a while at least.

So the UK has a population on 60 Million... how many people here actually understand what is going on... not many.., 10%.. or less

The average guy in the street does not have a clue how the whole shebang works and even the educated fellows in Academia have a hard time trying to grasp the issues

What kind of Democracy is that may i ask.
