I think we had a thread like this, but scams are very common.
Avoid the shops in the airport (there are no bargains any how).

Another scam in Bangkok is the littering scam, the cops have removed all trash bins on lower sukhemvit and wait for people to throw trash away or toss a cigarette. I also heard this has extended to the Skytrain.

Ignore anyone who tells you xxxxx is closed, monks who try and collect money after noon, and if you actually buy some gems then you deserve the fancy glass you just bought.

If you want to go to a specific restaurant, make sure you go to THAT restaurant. Somboon seafood is a popular target, where the cabbie takes you to some other crappier place and pockets a commission. And by law restaurants must post the prices in the menu.

Also watch out for the switch tax scam, where you negotiate a price to Pattaya or elsewhere with a taxi and he then drives you to his friend's taxi, usually an older crappier car.

In short, there are a lot of scams going on...and its getting worse

If someone were to just read your post Snick they would have a huge edge. Those are big. Also always make sure the price on your bill is correct AND so is the amount of change you get back. I've been surprised how many times various places the server tries to slip a 100 baht note out of the change and when you look up it suddenly appears and is dropped on the tray.

This is an order of magnitude scarier than any of the other scams you mention. I mean we are talking about people being set up and possibly ending up in jail if they don't pay out large sums of money. And I think there is something going on - the articles mention a number of cases, and they don't seem like people who would shoplift.

I think this is going to cost Thailand big time unless they sort it out and publicize that. Otherwise a lot of people are going to end up cancelling Thai holidays, certainly from Singapore where people are pretty risk averse anyway.

Avoid all this crap by simply moving here and avoiding anything and anyplace that tourists go to.

I've had at least five people ask me about this in the last couple of weeks, including members of my family.

This thing is getting a lot of press (and not the good type) in Britain and Ireland right now.

Definitely won't be giving King Power any of my business from now on.
