(terryw @ May 22 2009,12:42) Yesterday in a local council by election in Salford the BNP came third behind Labour and the Lib Dems with 17% of the vote.
what a load of shit...
There was relief for Labour as the party held on to a council seat in the constituency of expenses row minister Hazel Blears.
Labour's Matt Mold won the Irwell Riverside ward of Salford Council, albeit with a reduced majority.
Ms Blears, the Communities Secretary, attended the count and said she was "absolutely delighted" with the result.
Last week she apologised for the handling of the sale of her London flat and handed over £13,000 to the taxman to cover capital gains tax.
Speaking after the count last night, the cabinet minister said: "The result shows the values of Salford people are the values of the Labour Party."
Yesterday's by-election was the first test of voter reaction to the parliamentary expenses scandal.
Party chiefs had braced themselves for a backlash from the public which, it was feared, could have included a surge of support for the British National Party.
Mr Mold won 606 votes followed by the Liberal Democrats with 293.
The BNP candidate, with 276 votes, came third followed by the Conservatives with 189, the Green Party on 125 and UKIP with 123.
Voter turnout was 17.5%.
After the result was declared there were some scuffles involving BNP activists who shouted towards Ms Blears and tried to present her with a chocolate bar, in reference to one of her expense claims.
The MP responded by saying: "The people of Salford have firmly and thoroughly rejected the politics of the BNP."
Earlier this week the Prime Minister told a Downing Street press conference it was "unacceptable" for Ms Blears to avoid capital gains tax by telling the taxman the property was her main residence after designating it her second home for expenses purposes.
Asked whether she expects to survive the expected Cabinet reshuffle, she said: "You have heard the Prime Minister say he has full support for me, I'm doing a great job as Secretary of State and I get on with it.
"I am a minister but most importantly I am the Member of Parliament for Salford and tonight Salford has given me a great result and I couldn't ask for anything better."
She added: "I get on with my job, I'm the MP for Salford, I go out, I talk to people, I don't disappear away behind closed curtains.
"My job is too important, my job is to represent the people who sent me to Parliament and that is a very serious responsibility."
Martin Bell, the former Independent MP, said he might stand against Ms Blears at the next election but he would prefer to see a local person do so.
The former Tatton MP told BBC Radio Manchester: "I'm 71 next year, I think that's a bit old.
"What I would prefer to see is what I call the local model, where some well-known local person, and Salford is full of good people who could do this... and you do it locally. I think that would be a brilliant idea."
By-election winner Mr Mold said the vote showed that even in "rough times" for Labour, the people of Salford shared the party's values.Attached Filesseriously pig headed, arrogant, double standard smart ass poster!

Apparently when this Council seat was previously contested the BNP only got a handful of votes. If on the 4th June the BNP get only 6% of the vote in North West England then they will get a seat in the European Parliament. In the east end of London they are likely to get a higher percentage of votes.

not from there myself, but isnt salford a predominantly asian/indian area.?
and still, the BNP got nearly half the votes as labour.
and voter turn out was only 17%.
i think this shows a significant shift towards the BNP myself.you cant polish a turd.

I was thinking exactly the same thing myself, for a party that is on the nose, they would be very encouraged in getting almost half the votes of the winner.
A vox populi from somewhere in middle England carried on TV last night asked locals if their voting intentions had changed in light of the expenses scandal & several volunteered that they would vote BNP, one even said that the major parties needed to be sent a message.
As obnoxious as the thought is to so many here, prepare yourself for a voter reaction greater than most expect. I have seen the outcome of elections go against the polling when the electorate has been suitably upset.
There are more than enough bloody minded people in the UK only too happy to see a giant turd dropped into this mess. A few BNP MPs would soon get some policy changes.Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

expenses are hot topic, but they are an assist in bringing to the fore other concerns real worries and dissaproval that joe brit has about his country and the way it is heading ,immigration legal and illegal is very hot with public so as the general waste of publics hard earned money/taxes the increasingly oppressive nature of petty britain on its people and the fact that democracy seems to be going out the window here.dont get me wrong there are many good things about the uk,but some of those are now in danger of ebbing away.robbo

At that By-Elelection the BNP would've mobilised all thier members and supporters to get out and vote, And with only 17% of the people of Salford bothering to go out and vote still they still get trashed and this is when Labour are at thier lowest ratings in the polls for years.
I think your dreams of a 100% White Aryan Utopia aint gonna happen anytime soonIt's never okay for men to cry! You know who cries? Girls. And little babies. And little baby girls.

As NF says Salford is a predominantly white working class areas. the more asian/indian areas are further north towards Bolton/Bury/Blackburn and areas of S Manchester.
This is a target area for the BNP along with the W Midlands and NE.seriously pig headed, arrogant, double standard smart ass poster!
