(Tomcat @ Mar. 17 2009,16:57) "now youve let the cat out of the bag" has a pretty nasty origin.....
TC is correct  -  the Kings Regulations specified the exact details of the cat, length, construction etc.
It was made on the ship by one of the bosun's mates and was required to kept in a red velvet bag.  The army had similar regulations.

Lots of the sayings we use today can be traced back to shipboard usage.  200 years ago most people worked in very small groups or on their own.
The Royal Navy and the dockyards were by far the biggest employers and therefore the biggest grouping of people to exchange sayings.
The British Army was only about 1/4 the size of the Navy.

                    Sayings I've always liked:-

The more ye know the less the better.

                    Bangs like a shithouse door.

Eyes like a shithouse sewer rat.

You seem to have mistaken me for someone who gives a shit.

Finally not a saying as such but a bit of graffiti that always makes me laugh:-

Also available in white  (written on the back of a very dirty white van)

                    RR.
Pedants rule, OK. Or more precisely, exhibit certain of the conventional trappings of leadership.

"I love the smell of ladyboy in the morning."
                    Kahuna

A friend's father used to say: "Boy, you'd rather run through hell in gasoline shorts than mess with me."

My dad sometimes says:"X-person is crazier than a shithouse rat."

(Stogie @ Mar. 17 2009,23:06) I was told that this came from market traders selling sacks of rabbits
You may be right. Some of these sayings have dubius origins. I just happen to be listening to a radio show where this was the subject. The cat out the bag meaning that some bugger is for it now.

The seamen would have to make the cat out of rope and put it in a little bag until the dreaded hour. The good ol days eh!
