The first concert (my initiation to the world of live gigs) was The Monks - Bad habits.
1981 at the National Arts Center in Ottawa, Canada. It was strange to see a so-called punk band playing in a swanky opera house reserved for the National Ballet and orchestrial concerts.

Same year as the last tour for Split Enz which I saw with the Payolas opening. I was 13 at the time!!!
But the best concert I have ever enjoyed was The Cure - Head on the door tour. Verdun arena in Montreal, Canada. No opening act - straight 2 1/2 hours of alternative goth magic.

The Who & Rolling Stones on consecutive Saturdays in 1974 at Belle Vue Manchester

Led Zeppellin at Preston Guild Hall in 1973 - Queen were the support act

I heard Live Aid for free - I was playing cricket less than a mile from Wembley stadium at the Abbey National Sports ground.

For me it has to be the Peps in Hyde Park (2004), when I was working in London. Imagine Frusciante, golden circle tickets, sunset in HP. Magic! See pic.

Second favourite has to be Yann Tiersen at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. He didnt do too much his classical work, more the experimental stuff. Love his work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKqHj...eature=related or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWrxs...eature=related

Also the Moloko 'warm up' concert at Eindhoven (for Lowlands). Imagine this alto / electro group blowing the speakers at a technical university. Hillarious. Absolutely legendary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kl8mpAvTm_Y

Dutch group Pete Phily & Perquisite at Noorderslag up North in Holland was super, one of the few hip hop groups I like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OuTXj4Ll7U

Another memorable one was Travis in the old BBC HQ in London. Kings of Leon were the 'warm up act.' OMG, they rocked it. This is when they were just coming up, and they completely, and I mean completely blew away Travis. To the point that people actually started leaving after the warm up. Legendary.  At Jonathen Ross (spelling?): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMt1Xbofi4M

Was planning to go to Leonard Cohen in Ahoy, Rotterdam. But tickets are a whopping 150Euro's! He has to be my all time hero. Yes, yes, even the kids know the legends

I see Thin Lizzy around a dozen times and even got to know them personally. Phil Lynott invited me to a special for Dutch TV .. even got to play Scott Gorhams guitar ( he taught me how to play  the intro to the " Rocker" and to this day i say he got it wrong..its A7 mate not A Major)... Also see there first gig when Gary Moore joined after Eric Bell left around 1973? and that was the best gig i ever see

The good thing about Lizzy were that the boys used to get up at the bar and sink a few drinks with the fans.  before the gig

Saw YES in Vegas and they were incredible ending with "yours is no disgrace " . Led Zep were good... Genesis not bad...Pink Floyd were a bit clinical...Status Quo, fucking brilliant.

Growing up in Belfast in the 1980s it was hard to see live bands .
Firstly many bands refused to come here for security reasons.
Secondly those that did had the religious maniacs who ran the councils to deal with (the christian taliban ) .

The Clash and Siouxsie and the banshees were banned in Belfast , even stranger ELO were banned in the town of Ballymena on the grounds that there were secret backward messages in their songs and that the kids would become Devil worshipers - I kid you not that is a true story .

The bands who did play were treated like royality and loved it here ........

I remember still at school seeing,

Motorhead - the original line up , Lemmy , Fast Eddie and Filthy Animal Taylor on drums , this band were the fastest , loudest band around at the time .

Madness/Bad Manners - full scale riot between gangs of skinheads at this one , fighting the security , the police , then each other , we were kids of about 14 shitting ourselves in our 2 tone suits , but looking back afterwards this just added to the experience , after all it was Belfast and a good night was not a really good night without a riot

                (nigelr69 @ Oct. 04 2008,07:55) Dead Kennedys - who I brought out to Aus in 1983
You must have some great stories about those boys. Yello Biafra is a  "special" man

And you saw the Stnoes 1965?!
Yeah Jimslim it was an incredible tour.
Jello was his usual verbal self. The muso's Union (parasites) needed us to provide a list of union member bands that would be playing with them, however Jello just accepted demo tapes from everybody and decided to choose them himself, often on the night.
In Queensland the black drummer Peligro was arrested after they had played Festival Hall, for drinking on the Street. The Queeensland Police, notorious for their hatred of Aboriginal Australians thought he was an Aboriginal. They also dragged East Bay Ray and Klaus Flouride.
After 5 hours waiting outside the lockup, they were finally released.
                It was wild!!!!!!
