If money is not an issue, go for it, i started in the care industry years back then progressed to nursing.
Social work is reasonably well paid but you will need to qualify first.

A good place to start is working with learning disabilitys, this way you learn the fundamentals of the care industry, social care, a little nursing skills and prehaps be able to make a choice on an area what interests you. A good point with learning disabiltys is they will normally welcome people with life experience, plus some places will take people with little or no experience, reason being, it's often a difficult area to work, so you need to bring along a healthy dose of humour,a very thick skin, plus they can mold you to there system of working.

Nursing homes ,are good for experience. Say you wanted to join the NHS you stand a lot more chance with experience, than none, although it is not impossible. I would say you have a lot more chance than say a school leaver, mainly because life experience counts.

The NHS is by far the best payer at relative grades i.e nursing assistant, health care assistant, support worker, staff nurse, charge nurse. They offer the best leave entitlement, conditions, support and progression.
Oppurtunitys are a lot better in the health service.

Enabling is another area, where you help people to live a relative normal life, maybe you would work with an indivdual who say loves football or a sport, so you would accompany this person on outings or football matches( YOU GET PAYED AN HOURLY RATE, THEY PAY THE ENTRANCE) Think little britain!!!
          Well not quite!

Day centres are good, again learning disabiltys or elderly, normally council run, so money a little better than private sector, more courses, better hours and conditions.

Another area would be to use your existing skills combined with care work. There are a lot of projects around the country, where people with learning dis or disabiltys of some nature work , possibly light industry.
These places might make a particular product, then sell to industry, then the money comes back into the charity or buisness. With this you use your existing knowledge of engineering/manufacturing, but in a different capacity. Maybe in a support role, share the highs and lows of the people you are helping!

Agency work can be good and an ok hourly rate, down side is never actually working in one place, never really building a rapport with people you care for, feeling like a spare part, being giving crappy jobs by regular staff. This does actually suit alot of folks, as they don't have to assume so much responsibilty, as they can just walk away at the end of the shift. You would need experience first, for an agency or bank care/nursing service to employ you. One other problem ,you normally find a fair few eastern europeans doing this work, which could mean a struggle for shifts. A lot of phillipinos come here and do bank, but they are usally very good and very qualified, normally staff nurses. A plus would be the flexibility, say you wanted to take time out to travel, although probably not payed!

The down side of the care industry can be long hours for rubbish money.
I used to work in behaviour that challenges services a while back, the down side of this area of learning dis can be violence!(frequent)
If you are not prepared to experience this, a normal learning disabilty service is normally fine.
I currently work in an acute mental health unit, dealing with bi polar, depression, schizaphenia, and related mental health issues- self harm, drugs and alcoholism.

A lot of the care industry can be rewarding, but it's not for everyone. I would say try and join the health service.

There are really good oppurtunitys in the ambulance service now days due to a major shift in practices.
They are now training paramedics to do more, techs are going up to paramedic level and the ambulance assistants are being trained to become or recruited as emergency care assistants. They work with paramedics responding to blus light calls. Again not for everybody!

Hope this has shed a little light and i hope it wasn't to long winded!
Good luck to you all star and keep your chin up!!!!!

pm me if there is anything else you want to know regarding this!
i'm going where the sun keeps shining.................
