The stench from a home-made cesspit has exposed a group of 14 illegal immigrants crowded into a three-bedroom home in north-west London.

Police raided the house in Wealdstone on Tuesday after neighbours complained of a smell coming from a trench in the garden being used as a toilet.

The illegal immigrants, all men, are thought to be Chinese nationals. Immigration officials arrested two residents who are thought to have organised the living arrangements.

Police and immigration officers found the cesspit in the back garden of the property.

Inside the house, the whole floor area was crammed with mattresses and the occupants had converted a downstairs living room into a makeshift bedroom.

Officers also found examples of dangerous wiring, including seven rice cookers running from one power point.

Harrow councillor Susan Hall said: "Illegal houses of multiple occupation present a clear danger to those living in them and a nuisance to those living nearby - in this case neighbours who were disturbed by smells."

The residents, who are believed to work in the construction industry, were collectively paying £1,000 a month in rent, the council said.

As I'm sure you know Stogie, we have similar issues here in California with Mexicans.
I know that most of the people that come here illegally are hard working and are just looking for a better life for their families and themselves. That said, it's also true that the people who come to work here illegally are overwhelmingly from the illiterate, underclass. That means that we have to deal with all of the problems they bring, like overcrowding, garbage, violence, overpopulation, etc.
The thing is, the people who hire/exploit these people for cheap, docile labor are making a killing while the rest of us are left to suffer with the aforementioned problems brought by illegal immigration.
If the authorities were to make it too costly for businesses to hire illegals they would not be coming here in droves like they are now. As it is now they mostly turn a blind eye, while occasionally making a few raids for the benefit of the media, and then everything goes back to the status quo.
What we're seeing is the much ballyhooed "free market" in action. There is a demand for cheap labor here that is being filled by undocumented workers. Businesses are making money and the rest of us are getting fucked.
I should also mention that I myself am an immigrant to the U.S. My family came here from South America when I was three-years-old. It was a different era then, and mom had money so there was no problem coming here perfectly legally.

The UK government has to hold an election before May 2010. All of my mates without exception will be voting for anyone but the Labour party.

The problem is that I doubt that a change of government will do anything to challenge the multi-cultural myths. Politicions are too scarred of being called racist.

I'm no fan of the present administration  I never voted for them and I can't conceive of any situation which I would!

However they have recently changed the law in the UK and made it easier for the immigration authorities to charge employers with using illegal immigrants and greatly increased the level of the penalties on conviction.
Previously it was harder to prove and the fines were laughable.

OK it's a small step but at least it is in the right direction.

On the other side  -  most of the people importing and exploiting illegal immigrants have gained UK citizenship and are usually 'countrymen' of those they are exploiting.
Personally I think they should have their citizenship removed as part of their conviction and should be sent back whence they came.

Beware the "ethnic minorities" vote.The problem is that the U.K. must make voting "compulsory" and scrap that first past the post system where somebody on 30 something percent still wins, only then will the MAJORITY surface and be forced to chose.
