George Carlin Dead at Age 71
    June 23, 2008, 2:44 AM EST

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) -- George Carlin, the dean of counterculture comedians whose biting insights on life and language were immortalized in his "Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV" routine, died of heart failure Sunday. He was 71.

On TV back then according to George, you could "prick your finger" but not "finger your prick".

    George Carlin will me missed.

A true genius and will be missed by many. I loved him when he was doing his Crazy Al, the weatherman routine when he first started out on American TV. "Todays high will be, whenever I wake up." Classic line and just one of many from this man. R.I.P. George.

Easily in the top 5 of any American comedian, will surely be missed, he was funny right up till the end

            good George quote;

''When you're born you get a ticket to the freak show. When you're born in America, you get a front row seat.''

A local sports talk show dedicated its afternoon programming to George and was asking the listening audience who their "Mount Rushmore" Comedians would be.

I chose Carlin, Richard Pryor, Andy Kaufman and Lenny Bruce

I read up here recently that there were no funny Americans so it would be hard to have a comedy Mt. Rushmore.

in the same thread I said this guy was "The master" and still believe it, no one was ever better than George.
He WAS influenced by Lenny Bruce however, something he had admitted many times.

pick up his 3 books, I've read 'em all and they are easy reads and funny as hell, his observations on life are usually pretty spot on.

I've honestly never heard of him but then again good comedians tend to be a bit like Guinness inso far as they don't travel well overseas.

(smuttleydfs @ Jun. 23 2008,22:40) "Mount Rushmore" Comedians
Think there are two different types of comedians.

There's the Seinfeld type that rely on very clever material.

And the Robin Williams type which rely on an incredible on-stage persona.

As for Mt Rushmore, Howard definitely deserves a spot.

I'd put Groucho up there too.

I read an obituary to him in one of the daily papers at work today , he certainly seemed a colourful character and pretty radical for his time
