It is a fraud that is an in-joke amongst sailors who capture the attention of their sailing guests every sunset by encouraging them all to stare at the setting sun "& wait for the green flash".

I have been twilight sailing on a mates yacht for over 35 years & over 100's of perfect sunsets, no-one has ever seen it.
Notice the Wikipedia site has "mock pictures" of the green flash.

It is total bullshit & I challenge anyone to prove that it occurs.

At the risk of being acused of one-upmanship yes I have seen it.

I too thought it was a hoax for many years. Especially as I had many people say before that it was a good night to see one - and then nothing!

But one sunset I was watch on my own and just as the sun was about to disappear - yes it did turn green.

If you go to the wikipedia link green flash and look at the first picture.
That is pretty much what I saw - though the camera has made the sky look much more red and the green was more like what is depicted in the second picture.

It's a pointless argument, but I don't feel like spending the next 35 years to find something I couldn't see before.
