(stogie bear @ May 28 2008,05:17) Apart from Denis Leary there are no funny Americans.
Interesting how many old, really old comedians are mentioned.
For myself the seminal characters in the history of comedy were
Charlie Chaplin
Buster Keaton
Laurel & Hardy
Marx Brothers
The Three Stooges
Bob Hope
The Goons
Benny Hill
Ronnie Barker
Rowan Atkinson
Jim Carey
Roberto Benini
Jack Black
Sasha Baron Cohen
I will remember ones I left out but Cohen's masterpiece movie Borat is the most significant & groundbreaking comedy to have arrived in the past 50 years.
It set a new standard for others to follow.Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

(jimslim @ May 27 2008,15:22)(PogueMahone @ May 28 2008,05:12) Woody Allen.
I remember watching one of his movies where he tried to escape from prison with a gun made of soap only to find it was raining .
In the same movie he played a cello in a marching band , running out in front and sitting down on a stool .
Great stuff
Pretty sure it was called "Take the money and run" - character's name was Virgil
Woody Allen also did some great standup but gave it up at end of sixties to concentrate on moviesNo honey, no money!!

On Wednesday 26th March 2008 Stogie Bear, TTChang, Koeykang (& companion), Rosco (with Sonia) and I were sharing a meal at La Stroganoff opposite La Bamba on Soi 13/1, Pattaya.
The discussion came onto comedians and we all threw in names.
I had one of my €œsenile moments€ and could not remember the name of an American comedian who became a giant star in the 1950€™s and who launched the writing careers of people such as Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Woody Allen, Michael Stewart, Mel Tolkin, and Larry Gelbart.
At his peak 60 million viewers watched his TV show each week.
Although he fell out of favour over the last thirty years, he now appears, frail and approaching 90, on the American late night talk shows and is still capable of double-talking, hilarious, total nonsense in any language the host throws out.
A true original!
This thread brought his name into focus €“ Sid Caesar
