So, what dog is a good choice?

Border terriers would be perfect for you. Brilliant dogs. Friendly, nice looking, so intelligent you'd swear they were psychic, big personalities even though they're quite small dogs, and incredibly determined.

Relations of mine - uncle, aunt, cousins - have had a series of them over the years. One time when my son was little, we were visiting and we took a couple of the dogs out for a walk over the fields. We were throwing sticks for them. There were some dismantled goalposts lying in the field. To make my son laugh, I picked one up and threw it up in the air for the dogs to chase. We carried on walking for a while and when we looked round, these two little dogs were doing their best to drag this full size goalpost along behind us!

Smooth coated dachshund or a long hair dachshund if you do not mind a bit of grooming every now and then. I have 6 doxies and one German Shepherd Dog. The mini's are much more comical than the standard sized doxies.

Oh, and the Boston Terrier is fugly!

Not only the Papillon but Jack Russells are too and let's just say that a Beagle is the choice of Andrew Sullivan...
