The essence of a cheap motel room is the air conditioner:
* must be a window unit
* one of those older, really noisy beasts (rumbles like earth moving equipment)

The correct air conditioner establishes the proper ambiance. Heavy curtains and thick carpeting complement enhance the effet. A queen-sized magic fingers bed is optional, but certainly nice to have. A bucket of ice, a bottle of good booze and a stack of disposable cups completes the arrangement.
