    Hats off to you thaimeup

You have an excellent grasp of the problem because most people don't understand the way the US can export their inflation.
Many OPEC members are refusing payment for their oil in US$ now, Venezuala being the latest, but while the Saudi Royal family owes their survival to the 160,000 US troops based there, they will keep the taps open for as long as the oil lasts.

My point is there is a push to replace the US$ as the de-facto world currency.

It will only happen if the Chinese on the one hand &, believe it or not, the Russians on the other, gang up to devalue the greenback through the floor.

Up till 1949 the Chinese currency was backed by silver, they still have more of the stuff hoarded than the rest of the world combined & the rouble is backed by gold.
No-one knows what the Russkis have stockpiled but when they think they have enough, they will really start to exert their financial muscle.

Notwithstanding the very valid points thaimeup makes about the interconnectedness of the worlds currency & security,
one day the US could well find itself caught in a pincer movement that they will not be able to compete against,
& don't forget neither China nor Russia have fond memories of America.

Don't believe me? Read your history books.

The Chinese have already declared that if it comes to it, they can afford to allow their 1.6 trillion US$ reserve of cash to be devalued to zero.

An idle threat? Who knows, you just don't want to taking bets against them.

And the size of the cycle this time? Yes, I was going to say that eventually things would swing back,
but it is going to be a long time & I didn't want to bog myself down with speculation.

Lastly, establishing a value for this collateralised debt is likely to take much more than a year & prove to be so problematic, that it may never achieve more than junk bond status.
And that won't help the rescue of Wall Street's finest, most of whom are completely & utterly broke as we speak.

There are just too many ways this can all play out, but we all have ringside seats for the world's greatest "train crash" happening in slow motion right now.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

China and India will surpass the US soon...We can't be protective of our economy, it wouldn't be fair...ha ha ha, we are swirling down the toilet but people are worried about opportunity for those less fortunate in other countries. I only hope someone will help us when we need it...soon!

        In what respect ?
        Population ?
        pollution ?
        Corruption ?

But if you are talking about purchasing power on a per person basis....never.

I wouldnt say never...but probably 25 years for China to equalise , China is
buying up Copper mines, Coal mines, exploration rights and also producing Scientists and Engineers at a rate that exceeds at least Europe...

many African countries like the Congo are practically Chinese satellites. The Chinese build the railroads and highways and nick the minerals in return..
I think in October last year at one time there were 79 chinese ships in the queue at some Australian mining port.( newcastleton?)

India has long way to go. They have too many problems.
            1. Caste system, which needs to be worked out
            2. Education system needs to be looked at it again.
            3. India has no political stability.
            4. Most of india's land is farming.

And we what we see in news and media is only educated folks. But they never show poor side. I do understand economy is doing good. But wont last until they change few things and attitude. Trust me on this things I grew up in India.

                No geography lesson needed thanks.

Try this quick history lesson -

The Saudi Royal family rules Saudi Arabia.
They are deeply unpopular with the bulk of the population, not considered extreme enough for the hard line Muslims, & their alliance with America has them outraged.
And that's just the Sunnis, you can't imagine how extreme the Wahibs are ..... they with their Iranian counterparts are the main contributors to the destabilisation of Iraq today.

Loooong before George W. decided to invade Iraq to pay Saddam back for the humiliation he caused his old man, George Snr in Kuwait, it was deemed necessary that the Saudi Royal family must be protected at all costs.

Hence the establishment of US bases on Saudi soil at a great cost to defend the Royals from being overthrown.
That would result in the immediate stopping of oil deliveries to the US - an untenable situation.
In irony stacked upon irony, the thank you from the Royals comes in the form of subsidised oil - the entire US war machine gets all their oil at $20 a barrel.

This has been used in turn against fellow Muslims in Iraq & Afghanistan. They all owe a debt of gratitude to the Saudi Royal family.

The Bin Laden family are part of the inner cicle in Saudi, members of the elite, so before the rest of us learnt that it was one of their wayward sons behind 9/11,
all of the Bin Ladens who were in the US at the time were collected on the 10/11 & safely removed from the States.

This, while there was a nationwide ban on all flights.

Which all goes to prove there is nothing you can't get away with if you control oil supplies to the US.

I see where your confusion comes in MARKUK, the troop deployment in Iraq is 160,000 & I quoted the same number for Saudi Arabia. It may be only 40,000, I'm sure someone will help me on that.
I also get confused between Sunnis & Shi'ites.....like I care?

The problems of the middle east, how can it ever be resolved?

Actually there are very few US Troops in Saudi Arabia anymore since their presence was a source of friction. The USA Troops stabilizing Saudi Arabia are next door in Kuwait, UAE, etc...
                    and of course in Iraq

( and its all a mess, besides befriending the USA the other trick the Saudi Royal family uses to stay in power is to throw money at their Fundamentalists, who then built madras' everywhere, converting a generation into extremists, spawning the Taliban, which spawned Al Quaeda, yuck )

The big news of the second half of 2008 could be the collapse of the Euro.

Major economic problems in Spain, Italy and Greece could force them to leave the Euro.

Bah, they've been saying that about the Italians from day 1.

                                They'll fudge the requirements (again)
