EU is the biggest economy in the world 
You can deny it exists, but it does not change the facts. The EU is still pretty much in its youth and many people are skeptical to it, but the economic part of it has been a success. If you doubt the European market really exists make a call to Bill Gates and ask him if it exists...
EU economy will continue to grow in the following years when the "poor" eastern European countries take advantage of the inner market and hopefully some rich non-EU countries will join also. The EU will be the biggest economy until it is passed by China and eventually India. The US with it's limited amount of people can never be #1 when the bigger countries fixes their economy. Its really just a numbers game.
Here are the most recent numbers published by CIA showing the biggest GDPs (purchasing power parity):
European Union $ 14,450,000,000,000 2007 est.
United States $ 13,860,000,000,000 2007 est.
China $ 7,043,000,000,000 2007 est.
Japan $ 4,346,000,000,000 2007 est.
India $ 2,965,000,000,000 2007 est.
Americans are no longer the richest people around either. My country has about 20% higher GDP per capita than the States which probably was the opposite just 15-20 years ago.
As history tells us the economy is cyclic and of course the US (and rest of the world) will come back stronger after the recession (or maybe even depression).
If some countries gets their will and the currency for oil no longer will be $ but Euro instead it will be very interesting to see what happens.

I am not sure what list you are referring to, however, here is the link to wikipedia which gives rankings from different agencies from data compiled in different years. In any case, Luxembourg is the highest in all categories and that throws your theory regarding population out the window...
