It is a huge industry. Billions spent on incarceration and all of the probation, parole, fines, and ankle bracelets ect. I think the actual number incarcerated is just the tip of the iceberg. America has become a police state in many respects. Many of the "laws" are completely unconstitutional, but that doesnt stop them from being used against the populace. We are monitored, our phones tapped, internet tapped, email tapped. All without the slightest nod toward the constitution. We are victims of massive fear mongering propaganda, to give up our remaining rights. We dumb down our children with sub standard education. We deny scientific fact in exchange for religious or political beliefs. Basicly we are are fucked. Only solution, let out 90% of the prisoners then there will be space for the real criminals. The cops, the politicions, the leaders of religous cults, and corrupt corp types. The way I see it there are basicly just two crimes. Theft and assault With that in mind about 80% of those convicted or fined commited no crime
