  • William F. Buckley

I'm surprised that it's taken a Brit to start this topic...

(I did wait a couple of hours after the official announcement.)

Probably one of the most piercingly witty and accurate Conservative commentators of his era.

This man (and I have followed him for decades) could NOT be outwitted.

Bill Buckley - You are indeed a GOOD AMERICAN.

Thanks for saving your best ideas and speeches for PBS!

    America has lost a giant.

    May he RIP.

He liked to use big words so would probably find it very frustrating chatting up the girls at NEP.

my favorite phrase of his, when he was commenting on
a recent novel of Gore Vidal, (an arch enemy of his), this book, is "replete with tendentious furbelows), that'll send a few BM's rushing to the dictonary
Life is short. Live it well.

          Mmmm.

Buckley was a brilliant writer, but he is credited (credited?) with foisting Regan and the Bushes on the USA, and he was also one of the leading proponents of the now-discredited Project for the New American Century. Arseholes like Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfovitch and the rest all came to power as a result.

Clever turn of phrase, but personally I think his legacy was poisonous.

Transcript of key part of video above:

GORE VIDAL: You must realize what some of the political issues are here. There are many, even in the United States [who] happen to believe that the United States policy is wrong in Vietnam and the Viet Cong are correct in wanting to organize their country in their own way politically. This happens to be pretty much the opinion of Western Europe and many other parts of the world. If it is a novelty in Chicago, that is too bad, but I assume that the point of the American democracy€¦

WILLIAM F. BUCKLEY: And some people were pro-Nazi, too, some people were pro-Nazi.

VIDAL: €¦is you can express any point of view you want. Shut up a minute.

BUCKLEY: No I won€™t. Some people were pro-Nazi, and the answer is they were well-treated by people who ostracized them, and I€™m for ostracizing people who egg on other people to shoot American Marines and American soldiers. I know you don€™t care, because you don€™t have any sense of identification€¦

VIDAL: As far as I am concerned, the only sort of pro- or crypto-Nazi I can think of is yourself. Failing that,€¦

                      MODERATOR: Let€™s not call names.

VIDAL: €¦I would only say that we can€™t have the right of assembly€¦

BUCKLEY: Now listen, you queer, stop calling me a crypto-Nazi€¦

MODERATOR: Let€™s stop calling names and let€™s get€¦

BUCKLEY: €¦or I€™ll sock you in the goddam face and you€™ll stay plastered.

                      MODERATOR: Gentlemen, let€™s€¦

BUCKLEY: Let the author of Myra Breckenridge go back to his pornography and stop making any allusions of Nazism€¦

                      MODERATOR: I beg you to€¦

This is a hysterical smear. Buckley may have hated commies but he did not hate blacks or poor whites.

I dare you to show any evidence that Buckley did hate blacks or poor whites.

Further, your statement that he "supported McCarthy and Goldwater", two very different politicians, is simplistic and stupid. Buckley's feelings towards McCarthy were much more complex than your statement indicates; in fact, Buckley described his contempt for many aspects of McCarthy's character and legacy.

As for hating queers, just because he called a queer a queer does not mean he hates queers.

Why not take the tie-dye off and put the reefer down and resolve that this year you won't relive the glory days of 1968 for the 40th time...
