In my part of the US at least as many youngsters play soccer (futbol to the rest of you) as play what we call football. Soccer's a heck of a lot better aerobic sport than football. The ranks from which future soccer stars can be plucked are growing every year. Watch out because the US is going to be very good and you only have to see what happened with Lance Armstrong in bicycle racing to understand that success in a sport will change attitudes here more and in a shorter period of time than anything else.

The future of sports fans in the USA will be soccer. It's become a country of immigrants whom love soccer and a lot of kids follow soccer more because they play it in youth leagues whereas little league attendance is dwindling. I believe baseball will fade as a spectator sport and soccer will flourish in the future.

I can tell you two names that even Jai dee will know in 10 years

          Landon Donovan and Freddy Adu

Yes, the kids play soccer. But even the kids don't want to watch major league soccer.

Biggest group of immigrants are Hispanic and they love beisbol. It's been berry berry good to them. USA immigration policy is extremely racist; the dirty little secret that both asses and changs agree upon.

But yes, things slowly change. 60 years ago baseball, boxing, and horseracing dominated the sports pages.

Without a doubt, the tipping point would be if USA were in the World Cup Final game. That'd have a bigger impact than the 1958 Giant-Colt NFL Championship game. But the USA has to get there first. And the best athletes are still following the money into baseball, football, and basketball.

and that's the way we like it

that sport starts becoming popular here and what's next, paint drying?

The main problem that keeps soccer out of the mainstream sports is coverage and teams. There is simply not enough.

The only time a major national network is going to air a soccer game in the states is when they are in the world cup or in the finals. The only other place to find soccer is on espn. Even when it airs on espn its on one of their sister sites like espn2 or premium channels that you must, in most cases pay-per-view. Major networks know that soccer is not nearly as popular as baseball, football, or basketball, or even golf, therefore they see soccer as a poor investment and refuse to show it.

The other major problem with soccer in the states is the teams. Yes, a lot of major cities and states have teams, but, for the exact same reason that the networks wont show games, the cities and states wont budget their teams. The cities and states know that soccer is not a big revenue builder, so they focus all of their funding on new football stadiums and baseball diamonds. You can ask almost any person in a state with a baseball team or a football team where their stadium is and they can tell you...hell most will offer you directions on how to get there! But, you turn around and ask them where their soccer team plays and they wont have a clue, most wont even know their city or state has a team.

These are the two most important factors when it comes to soccer's popularity in the states. These two factors are working together to ensure that soccer never takes off. I wont be surprised if soccer never gains popularity. Supply and Demand: If the supply is low and the demand is low then the potential for growth is almost non-existant.

The sad truth is Soccer is a boring game that goes against everything that competitors are taught about winning.

You can get a point in the premiership without even scoring one goal. that's pathetic.

Plus the whole sport is run by a bunch of old codgers who refuse to modernise the game and make it better for the spectators.

well, to be honest the only sport that holds my attention is US football. I love it and it is very exciting in my opinion; if Basketball and Baseball ended tomorrow I would not care at all.

Soccer...... hmmm, just seems to me that there are too many people on the field and the field is too big! make the field a bit smaller and take 3 or 4 guys off each side and I may watch it, because you would have scores more like our football and I think that would be more exciting. I don't see how someone could waste 3 hours of their time and see a game end in a "nil-nil" tie. what the fuck is that?

Brock said this; The future of sports fans in the USA will be soccer.

I have been hearing that since the 70's and it still hasn't caught on and I don't believe it ever will. we have a team around here, The New England Revolution; no one goes to the games and no one cares around here. It's a foreign sport, let 'em keep it.

To be honest, football has lost its flavour for me
I am a massive Man United fan and had some great times in the 70's and 80's following them everywhere when we had a shit team, it didn't matter, give me them days anytime.
Now it seems to be all about money, with footballers being overpaid pansies these days, and an american buisiness man taking over my beloved club when he ain't a clue about football

Anyway, I think most people here who think football is boring probably don't understand the game or never played it. Just FYI, IT'S THE MOST POPULAR SPORT IN THE WORLD. Period! Now, Congratulation to USA...I don't think they can compete with European and South American teams yet...but the futur is bright for USA team...

I humbly disagree. They have proven time and time again that they CAN compete with the (so called) big boys!

Let's face it they are the only time to have even qualified for the world cup in their area of the world!

Northern Ireland 1 - England 0... how fucking sad is that!

Firstly I think soccer is boring and yes I have played and yes I understand it. I think a good spectator sport is one where you do not have to actually completely understand the game to enjoy watching. Having said that soccer is not rocket science so not sure what there is to understand?

Comparing sports is just pointless really as it is a case of apples and oranges. I appreciate the skill involved in a game like soccer but still find it boring.

When you say the most popular sport in the world I assume you mean outside the bedroom right?

So you mean by number of people playing or by people watching? If watching then do you mean live audience or TV.

I read somewhere that Volleyball actually has the most participants of any sport in the the world and Formula 1 has the largest television audience.
