  • Internet crackdown in the los

BANGKOK: -- The government will launch a crackdown on pornographic material, offensive cartoons and Internet websites that contain inappropriate material, the government spokesman said yesterday.

Surapong Suebwonglee said more than five million websites from around the world feature rape in their content, causing widespread alarm among relevant authorities.

€œThere are also games about rape,€ he said after he raised his concerns at the Cabinet meeting yesterday.

He said Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is now planning to supervise the crackdown on pornography and has already demanded to see clear results from relevant authorities by December.

Surapong said the crackdown would target pornographic material, cartoons and websites. He believed technological systems must be in place to block pornographic websites operated overseas, while relevant officials would nail down and arrest operators of the offending sites in Thailand.

€œWith sincere effort from all relevant parties, the severity of the problem should dramatically drop,€ he said.

Yawn... Thais don't want to join our site anyway! So who cares!

I looked at porn sites when the internet first started but haven't bothered for years.

Anyway - this is all government flag waving. Nothing will actually change!

As for that melodramatic ThaiVisa website... one of the biggest bunch of rumourmongers on the net. Bloody dreadful site. (But quite useful for newbies who need certain types of information sometimes!)

Just don't take what is on the forums too seriously, though! These so called "experts" have no more facts at their disposal as you or I have.

Yawn, nothing will come of this. The government launches a new crackdown/initiative/brain-fart every week

They got 0 attention span. Next week it'll be something silly like enforcing kids wear shoes instead of slippers.

It is entirely possible, IMO, with right wing conservatives (with a support base largely made of up of born again bible thumpers) in control of both sides of congress and the administration.

It's true the PM launches a new initiative every week, then people forget all the stupid ones, and nothing happens. Like dropping 1M paper birds on the Islamic fanatics? Yeah, like that really did a lot of good.

But besides this stupid new initiative, Thailand is the 1st country in the world where I found I was blocked from quite harmless sites. Unbelievably annoyingly. Note Thailand dropped from about 50 to 110 or so in the media freedom just last week (where North Korea is 130).
