  • Do you gamble?

Okay, since you only get to pick one option, please choose the one that you spend the most time or money on.

I'm very curious about how common gambling is & if people do it just for fun, or if some folks are really good at it. It seems that it's possible to be exceedingly good at some kinds of gambling, like races, some card games, Jai Alai, and some others.

If you don't spend more than a couple of hours a year on these things or less than $50/year, then consider yourself a non-gambler. (I'm a non-gambler, but I frequently muse about what talents I may have for some of these games.)

Retired the top 12.  Need a new dirty dozen.

Update: The new list is coming together: Nong Poy, Anita, Nok, Gif, Liisa Winkler, Kay, Nina Poon.  Is it possible to find 5 more?  Until then, GGs:  Jessica Alba, Yuko Ogura, Zhang Ziyi, Maggie Q, and Gong Li.

In Thailand gambling is frowned upon. Even playing cards for a buck will see you get hauled off to jail! In America they have conflicting attitudes (as they do with everything!) and some places have casinos and other places have slot machines etc...

In the UK gambling doesn't really get that much attention and even the Queen bets on the horses. Everyone buys a lotto ticket and the results are broadcast on that most conservative of institutions: The BBC!

That isn't to say that gambling isn't a problem there. Machines to tempt away your loose change are in every pub and restaurant and have been for decades. Online gambling is reaching frenzied proportions now as it seems that even church mice can apply and expect to receive a credit card!

Gambling for me is rather like drugs or cigarettes. I'm scared to try it because I may like it and get hooked.

So - for me the answer is NO! I don't gamble a single Baht of my money.

When i gamble which i occasionally do it is normally Roulette .

I dont consider it pure luck tho , certainly luck plays it part but  i have a strategy in play and i know if i get to a certain point either positive or negative that its time to go , also if  it starts draggin on a bit > 3 hours its time to go . I would say i am ahead overall .

I also went to a casino on my last trip to LOS , of course it wasnt in LOS but in Myanmar  on a island off the South West coast . I even managed to win 1000 baht , almost made up for my girl losing 1500 and the 500 exit fee LOL .

Poker, and in a minute my sit and go begins. A game of skill with a short term luck component.

I'd appreciate comments about the legality of internet poker poker in ASEAN countries, the liklihood of deportation or jail time if caught, and the accessibilty of broadband service in cheap aprtments.

It's one of my plans for early retirement.

Stogie, you must be joking.  The UK is gambling crazy since the rules were relaxed.  Poker chips and poker sets now outsell all family board games. The old days of xmas party monopoly are long gone.... Poker is king.

On Tv you can watch poker all the time, also even the Telegraph has its own poker page. glossy gambling mags proliferate.

I was a blackjack player and actually bought books on card counting which gives you the casinos edge. needless to say i give up as i havent got a spare lifetime to waste. Also casinos have found ways to get the counters.

Basically when a 10 ,A,or colour is dealt you count _1 and when a shit card is dealt(4,5,6,7,) you count +1 . Any time you are in a plus on the running count you bet . example ;;if you are in a +4 count, you bet 4 times your initial stake.

Any time your in a minus count you just bet your initial stake
the theory is that if good cards leave the pack then you have less chance , hence the -1 on the count.

Its a bit more complicated but thats the basics.

There are other guys who spend years watching roulette wheels trying to find a warped one with a number bias.Like train spotting i suppose.

I make sure the horse has 4 legs. If it doesn't then there's no way I will bet on it. But this system has it's downside as all the other horses in the race invariably are with full compliment, leg wise.

Bringing Down The House is an extremely emtertaining book about a team of card counters. Highly recommended.

I think they made that into a documentary . Was it the Vegas one where a guy shoehorned a PC into his jacket and was using a button in his shoe to make the count......the batteries were a big as house bricks and the guy was nailed...

You here stories of bionic eyes and all sorts.

I think all they do is ban you now for life but in the 70s it was bit different as the Mafia had other ideas about punishing card sharps. The good ol days eh!.
