  • Yikes... tensions in thailand

    ... just kidding.

But here is something interesting about the crazies in Thailand...

    From Reuters Alertnet:

South Thai tensions put Bangkok at risk, says expert
    05 Jan 2006 12:14:14 GMT

SINGAPORE, Jan 5 (Reuters) - A Singapore-based security expert has warned that Bangkok could face a terrorist attack within a year as tension rises between Muslim and Buddhist communities in Thailand's south.

Rohan Gunaratna, a security analyst at the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (IDSS) in Singapore, also told a conference on Thursday that Iraq had become the new epicentre of jihad, or Islamic holy war, inspiring a new generation of terrorists around the world.

Asian leaders have put terrorism high on their list of security concerns following bomb attacks in Bali, Madrid and London, as well as outbreaks of violence in the south of Thailand where 80 percent of the population is Muslim.

"We believe that the threat of terrorism is growing at a very serious pace, and that it is just a question of time before they attack Bangkok," Gunaratna, who heads a terrorism research unit at IDSS, told reporters on the sidelines of the conference.

He said Thailand's government needs to expand its intelligence network, engage Thailand's Muslim political leadership and work with neighbouring Malaysia to stop the spread of cross-border terrorism.

"If they don't do that, our assessment is that terrorists will attack Bangkok before the end of the year," he said.

Suspected Muslim militants killed two village officials in the south of Thailand this week. The deaths marked the second anniversary of the start of the insurgency, in which more than 1,000 people have died.

An attack on the Thai capital, which has a population of about 10 million, would have major economic implications for the country, said Sidney Jones, Southeast Asia Project Director for the International Crisis Group, who also spoke at the conference.

Yes you are right , I should not think that all Muslim people go around killing incident people but I think the only people that can stop the ones doing the killing are the Muslim people themselves and I just dont see them doing this. Every night that I sit at Big Dogs I wonder if this will be the night they blow up the place. Its not if, its when. I know they hate Americans, alot of people do, but to kill Thai people, almost all are Buddhists is just beyond my ability to understand. The only people that can stop them are the Muslim people and they are not doing anything to put a stop to it. I should not even be talking about this on this site. It just makes me mad to think about them killing good Thai people.

Regarding Muslims failing to stop others from killing, as an American what could I have done to stop Timothy McVay from blowing up a federal building in Oklahoma City?  Someone holding extremist beliefs does not necessarily advertise those beliefs, but even if they do and are advised by others that their thinking is wrong the extremist will very likely proceed with whatever action he or she has come to believe has to be taken.  Muslim terrorists kill other Muslims for not being what the terrorists consider a true Muslim, they don't just kill people of other faiths or races.  Condeming all Muslims for the actions of a few is no different than condemning all Americans for the actions of Timothy McVay or the Ku Klux Klan.

I was working in Malaysia when the World Trade Center towers were brought down.  Throughout the next day Muslims came up to me and apologized, some with genuine tears in their eyes.  They told me that what had been done was against Islam.  I had not requested this and did not even know some of those who came to me.  Based on this experience, I do not believe that a majority of the Muslims living in southern Thailand support the militant extremists.  And I definitely do not believe that the Malaysian government is supporting terrorism in Thailand in any way.  Malaysia does not hesitate to use their Internal Security Act, which is often referred to by Western human rights groups as Draconian, to control extremism because this represents as much threat to their secular government as it does to the Thai government.  Possesion of bullets, even without a gun, is punishable by hanging in Malaysia.

It is a sad fact that Bangkok is vulnerable to terrorist attack. But so is just about any other place on earth today.

            Regards, Joe

Mr. Engine, I agree with what you say about muslim terrorist killing so called "good " muslims people I think /and then agin I am just a dumb Texas Redneck/ that the non terrorist muslims are to chickin shit to stop the muslim terrorist. They live in fear that if they speek out and say anything that the terrorist dont like then they will be killed. I was in KL several times less than a year after nine one one and as far as a muslim city KL is very very liberal, at the same time I was in Kl I had to go to /not sure of the spelling/ Ala Setour just a little south of southern Thailand, people would come up to me on the street several times a day and tell me how happy they were about nine one one. You cant really compare the Klan or Tim Mcvay to the Muslim terrorist because they were taken down by the good people in America tho it did take way to long to take down the Klan. I had two good friends killed in Ok City and I was a happy camper when that SOB Mcvay was put to death. The thing is too that the muslims terrorist kill anyone because there Bible tells them to kill all persons that do not live the strict teaching of the coran. The KKK and Tim Mcvays were motivated by things other than religion. To tell you the truth I am not a big fan of any religion. I think way to many people have been killed because they were not the "right" religion.

I might be one of the few guys on this site who has read the Koran, Bible, a few books on Buddhism, the history of Mormonism, several studies on Hinduism, the Crusades and the Inquisition. And I'm still stupid! There is nothing I saw in the Koran about killing Americans. Nor is there anything in the bible about killing black people in America. Or in Catholicism about wearing condoms.

The base of all religions are fine. Where it gets twisted is by fundamentalists in each of them.

I don't see a huge difference between fundamentalist Mormons, Christians, and Muslims. They are all nutso. Frankly, the fundamentalist Mormons scare me the most. They hate EVERYONE. Likewise, the good people in all of these are all good.

Let's not forget, the Pople and Christianity started a lot of this animosity with the Crusades and the Inquisition, killing all "heretics" (meaning anyone who wasn't Catholic) in about 1100-1600 or so. Muslim genocide in Spain by the Crusaders at the time was a good one, as was the Inquisition. And how about the no.1 terrorists in the world, the IRA? Er, they're Catholic and have been waging war a lot longer than the Muslim terrorists.

I'm not saying I totally love the Islamic principles used recently in public, and they give me some discomfort, especially the new Iranian President, however, the Christians haven't been too great over time, and goold old Farrell in the US is a scary monster as well. I wonder how many people he killed in his anti-abortion campaigns.

If you want to get really scared look at the UN Watch web-site where several people in Iran were executive for sodomy in the last month. That would be us, wouldn't it?

I just reread all the posts in this thread.  None make any apology for terrorism.  Mine was only intended to point out that it is unfair to blame a large group for the actions of a few.

Alor Setar (pronounced and sometimes spelled Aloh Star) is the last bastion of power of PAS, the political party that wants to turn Malaysia into a strict Islamic country like Afghanastan was under the Taliban.  If people there were happy about 9/11 I was unaware, not having visited the place since 1999.  But in Malacca, where I was, the only people making such statements were young Malaysian Chinese who really didn't know what they were talking about.

                    Regards, Joe

I heard a report where over 6% of England Muslims (well over 100,000 people) agreed that the attacks on Londons subway system was a "Good thing"
To equate Timothy McVeigh or the KKK to radical islam is a little thin in my opinion however. But I will agree the world would be a much better place without them, and Ziggy is spot on about the religions in the "purest" form. The problem I have, and it could be my own paranoia (but I doubt if I'm far off) is when they do blow up Nana, will the radical islamic goat fuckers be hidden or supported by their "good cousins?"
These "people" will kill everybody. Us, you, anybody who does not adhere to their twisted brand of fanaticism. They kill their own, their women for disobedience, or being seen with a man who is not family. Their own daughters for so-called "honor killings." (better hide that I-pod)
McV. was what? 2 maybe 3 people?? KKK? more of a threat yes, but now just a bunch of Jerry Springer material. The Radical Islam is without question a world war that is being played out right now. I was there a few years ago when they busted a few of the "bad ones" up in Ayuthaya planning to blow up a few Western embassies for fun. I wasn't close enough to see the bust, (blocks away) but man you should have seen the Thai military come out of the wood work. From what I understand, they were days away from carrying out their plan, but Stogie would probably know more about this than me.
I don't see this situation getting any better in the near future. They'll be here (USA) again, I'm sure thay already are. Europe has had it's share of turmoil lately, and the poor countries in S.E. Asia are a breeding ground as we all know. Yes it's stupid to say they're all bad, but as the saying goes...not all muslims are terriorists, but almost all terriorists are muslim. (recent history)
                              randyman (no penpals please. )
