Dear John Burdett,
after finnishing your latest book "Bangkok Tatoo" yesterday at 5:00am, I felt that I have to thank you in a way that might be different, but definitely not misplaced though. I don't know if you are a board member of this extraordinary forum, an anonymous poster or just a quiet reader and really if none of them, I can truly say you are at least a brother in arms!
This is your second Bangkok "district 8" novel. Again with this fantastic character detective Sonchai Jitpleecheep (What a name....! ), again with a great eye for details on Thai mentality - Col. Vikorn just can't get any better!!!, on atmosphere - sometimes I could even smell the "Old Mens Club" and again with a very sensitive and broad knowledge on the people we're focussing on here: Thai transsexuals!
This time it's not one of the main characters like in "Bangkok 8", your first "Thai novel", it's Sonchais partner Lek. That's hilarious, a (transitioning-) kathoey cop talking with Nong, the mamasan of the Old Mens Club and Sonchais mother, about mascara aplication! Loved it!!!
I enjoyed this wicked, sarcastic and funny book to the end, although I found you lost a bit some characters like General Zinna and the lovely Lek in the last third of the story.
Anyway it was a great read, mate and I can't wait for the third district 8 novel! Maybe, the Old Mens Club will be transformed into a ladyboy bar.... we all know that's so much more money in there and Col. Vikorn would love it......
I'm yours in dhama,
MK
