      Is Tom Yam the same thing as Tom Yum. the soup with coconut milk and lime?

      If so, I like that. But all my Thai food has been stateside sorry to say. Although I have to say honestly I'm not sure how much I would like "authentic" Thai food. I'm afraid it might be a little scary for me.

      I'm cautious of anything of unknown origin, and any people that like bugs on a stick, their taste is suspect to me.

      I'll take me good ol American Thai: Ka Proud Lamb, Basil Duck, Pad Thai, Chicken Curry, etc.

        1. There is no coconut milk in a Tom Yum (Yam)
        2. Only authentic food is the real thing! A New England Clam Chowder is a New England Clam Chowder, Risotto Al Fegato is a Risotto from Tuscany with chicken liver and a Viennese Schnitzel is made from veal and fried in a pan and not in a fucking fritteuse. I hate Indians doing Italian food, Chinese making Sushis and Americans cooking "kinda" Thai - or even worse: bloody "fusion"! What's that?? Schnitzel in Soy sauce??
        Everybody should stick to his "mama cucina" and better do that well - only than you'll get something that's worth to be called food!

          Oh man is that ever true;

          I grew up with a Thai / Chinese family who lived a few houses away, and the mother used to have something for me everytime I went to their house. Her daughters were growing up "western", and once I "tasted" Thai I was hooked. But in most resturants the quality is often "fusion".
          Like MK said, a good authentic Thai resturant here is a good find. I normally have to send everything back to the kitchen saying "this Farang food, I'm Thai boy". I swear, everytime the cook comes out to see who he's dealing with.
          The very first time I came to LOS, I landed in BKK on a Sat. nite, and on Monday morning I was in a Thai cooking school for a week. Had a blast. Ate like a pig, met a lot of nice folks, had my first LB experience and had 2 more weeks to sew my oats. Years later I still go back for a one day course just to keep in touch.
          One thing though, it's a bitch to "cook" Thai for your friends...Fucking farang friends of mine can't stand the heat

            its actually quite common to get tom yum with coconut, but for those who want it without, its better to order "tom yum (kung/taleh/pla/gai) nam-sai", which is the lao-version. if you want to specify with coconut-milk you can order "tom yum (..) nam-nom".

            for the " ... nam-sai" version i can recommend the take-away stall on the right hand side of south pattaya rd/soi 15. when i think of it there is a stall on left hand side too. the soi is the narrow soi before you get to hollywood disco.

              I have never eaten nor even heard of a Tom Yum with cocnut milk and I've spent easily one third of my life in or in front of kitchens (the rest with LB's and unfortunately also doing something called "work" to afford the other 2 thirds... )

                  Hahaha.... sounds like the ultimative combination, mate!!!

                  I have some buddies who are spicy food addicts like me and we do sometimes cooking sessions, invite 10-15 people and spice them to death.... hahahaha!!!
                  So much fun, we do dinners for at least 4-5 hours, like a variety of starters, then curries - Indian and Thai, steamed and grilled fish and var. seafood, then always something like frogs Vietnamese style or an Asian version of tripes and finally deserts (- and if we get it incl. Durian.... LOL). Especially the girls go ballistic, drink liters of wine (of course we don't tell them that drinking increases the spiciness) and get in the end completely wasted!
