since thai languge is tonal there are openings for some childish fun - and i am so - whenever i drag my ass over to saphan kwai i am very concious about telling the clerks at skytrain to ask the how much there is to saphan KUAI - woahahaha..

also, be a little careful about using the word suai. my friend, a young handsome lad (in the eyes of thai ladies) was a bit unfortunate to pronouce this wrong - khun suu-ai mak - and the lady almost went balistic(not a bargirl). saui like most know means beautiful, but pron short, means something like no luck or something in that direction. so be careful out there while speaking the thai language ...

The thai word for "expensive" is phaeng, which in chinese means "cheap". So it's always a blast for me to go around thailand saying everything is "cheap". Makes me feel rich.

There are some very good sites for learning pronunciation of Thai words. For English speakers the fact it is a tonal language is the hardest to part to master.

If you want to learn Thai I suggest you learn to write Thai at the same time as this will help your pronunciation because once you know how to pronounce the consonants, vowels and dipthongs etc you have very little chance of stuffing up the word. This is harder and slower to start but makes life easier in the long run. However if you learn from transliterated Thai you have no idea if you are saying things correctly.

I can recommend some good books and sites if anyone is interested.

I have been formally learning Thai now for about 18 months but could speak a little before that. I find it makes a big difference to my experience whilst in Thailand and mostly in a positive way.

            Hi ozzie,

I have been thinking about learning some Thai for a while but didn't know the best place to start. If you could give me some pointers it would be appreciated.
I don't get it, is this a magic show?

Ozzie any good information about learning Thai you could post would probably be greatly appreciated. I know I have an interest in learning a bit of Thai because as you've mentioned, a little Thai can go a long way.

I was going to post to see if anyone knew of good software packages too. I tried Rosetta Stone and instead of immersion I got confusion! Anyone who has tried that POS will know what I'm yammerin' about.
I'm a rough-ridin', hootin' and hollerin', ladyboy lovin' cowboy! Bang bang yer dead!!!

Which are your favorite books Ozzie? Are they cheaper to buy in Thai bookstores, I'll be there in 6 week?

                Also a good website:
