I've just started taking Wing Chun. Does anyone have any ideas for fitness training that helps with Wing Chun?
How does it compare to other styles of Kung Fu?
Yes good ol Wing Chun...a style created by Buddhist nuns, name means "beautiful springtime" if I remember correctly. This was the style that the late Bruce Lee first studied under Yip Man in Hong Kong, and he's senior teacher was a guy callede William Cheung who lives here in Melbourne Australia, with whom's academy I studied at many years ago. It is a beautiful style of martial arts, very quick and very economical, no fancy stuff at all. The hardest part will be to learn the 3 forms, and sticky hands technique. Peservere with the style and u will be enriched and become a lot more learned and wiser human being.Remember a style such as this should only be used in extreme circumstances, and you shoulkd never show it of...have fun...
martial arts is surely great exercise for mind and body, but it doesnt make you a better fighter. you are probably going to inflict yourself more harm due to too much confidence in critical situations. unless youre very experienced in full-contact these kicks and punches will probably miss. it takes alot of training to get the correct range to your opponent. and most of the kicks are very ineffective in a fight. for those who have been in a fight, fights usually end up on the ground. so you would need some grapling techniques. good examples are thai boksing, where the fightes only very basic kicks and the cage fighters that are champions very often have been practising brazilian juijitsu.
the kung-fu myth was exposed back in the 70s when 5 of the best kung fu fighters from hong kong went to bangkok to fight 5 thai fighters. all five fights ended with ko, and they lasted all together 6mins!!
but sports like kung fu and tae kwon do are very nice to look at especially when theyre doing their stances and dances(or whatever its called).
Wing Chung sounds like a beautiful name for a Chinese LB.
Retired the top 12. Need a new dirty dozen.
Update: The new list is coming together: Nong Poy, Anita, Nok, Gif, Liisa Winkler, Kay, Nina Poon. Is it possible to find 5 more? Until then, GGs: Jessica Alba, Yuko Ogura, Zhang Ziyi, Maggie Q, and Gong Li.

I would imagine that you already do plenty of cardio work so if you have a good base in that area the next most important area is Balance and Breathing.
As Aussie said "Peservere with the style and u will be enriched and become a lot more learned and wiser human being.Remember a style such as this should only be used in extreme circumstances"
I have been doing self defence and martial arts for 30 years and never needed to fight or be voilent. Its all a matter of attitude and why you choose to particpate. It's certainly not about which one is better or who would win in a match up.
I heard they sent a team of masters from HK to Bangkok many years ago. Muay Thai warriors put the tails behind these win chun guys. (sorry to burst the bubble.. but you can still beat up ppl who don't work out at all)
