Tonight Gif and I went to see the masterful Johnny Depp in his latest outragious outing as the affably effeminate Captain Sparrow! The film was fantastic and I watched it at TH44! (This will mean more to the film distributors that it will to us normal folk.
(I was going to copy it onto my video camera but was afraid the letters of origin would give me away!)
But this time however, the two intrusions into my movie pleasure were minimal. There may have been more 'TH44' letterings in the movie but I didn't notice them and the two that I did spot were very subtle and not obviously trying to grab attention unlike the 'Superman Returns' fiasco.

I have never understood why pirating material occurs.
Quality V.S. Price never tempted me.
Yes I know people are making big bucks but from the consumer side of things I'd rather pay the full price and know the quality I am getting for my dollar.

Because people love bargains, or if it's free, even better.
The studios are pissed that they lose so much money to piracy. With VHS, it was mostly the Disney movies that went into the vault that you could pick up here in L.A, and you actually had to find some one selling it. With the internet and shareware, it's worldwide, and you can do it from home.
China is a big problem here for the studios. I think I read that almost 80% of DVDs sold there are pirated. Of course, music was a huge issue in the past but now it's movies. I work for a movie studio here in L.A., and the cost of DVDs for the studios is pennies, less than a dollar. Same with music CDs. Honestly, I can't blame them, if it's something people will buy, you have to stop the people giving it away for free but considering the cost, they could make them much more affordable.

Hence Superman has been out in Thailand for 2 weeks before release in the UK (Last Friday). This creates a buzz, which creates a market for the forgers.
The same goes for DVD releases. If they got their heads together and released all at the same time, it would get rid of a big proportion of the problem.seriously pig headed, arrogant, double standard smart ass poster!

That would be the end of movie theaters. The theaters make very little money when a movie is released. As it continues playing and they keep in it the theaters, they make a larger percentage. Let's say, first week, 10% - 4th week, 50%.
The theaters make all of their money (ok, not all but most) off of popcorn and soda. Soda costs pennies, some syrup, some carbonated water, and a cup. Popcorn at $5? That's big bucks there. There are some fans that just like the big screen experience. The large screen, the sound, is all better in a theater as opposed to viexing a DVD at home.
The window between theater and home viewing has closed significantly. Used to be 9 months between release in theaters and DVD, now it's down to 6 months, sometimes 3 if it didn't do well with the general public. Pirates 2 will definitely be out for Xmas, as well as Superman Returns, Cars, and anything else that made money.
Some movies do way better in international release than in US release, which includes both theatrical and home video releases. The third Matrix flick didn't live up to expectations here n the US but kicked ass internationally.
