I was thinking the same thing. Apparently he was being held for unrelated sex crimes in Thailand and one way to avoid doing bird in a Thai pen would be to admit to a more serious crime in his home country!

They'll probably find him innocent and he'll be charged with wasting police time and back out on the streets of the good ol' USA!

I was watching BBC and they mentioned Karr was under investigation for molesting a few of the students in the schools he was teaching at in Thailand.

So he certainly escaped from the welcoming gates of Thailand's prison system.
