Pirating & Extending Wi-Fi Connections........ Connecting to ATS over unknown neighbors Wi-Fi's

Was playing around tonight and did a cool experiment.  I was reading how you can use a Pringles potato chip can to make your Wi-Fi adapter have a highly directional antenna and hugely extend the range.

As it turns out the Pringles can is foil lined and has a length and diameter that is resonate at 2.4GHz. This is the same frequency use by Wi-Fi it just so happens. I€™m sure Pringles will never change the design of this can since its new found fame. I read about Soldiers stationed in Iraq using the Pringles can trick to extend there Wi-Fi range between areas on a Base. What the Pringles can really does is to concentrate the microwave signal making it into more of a beam€¦ and very directional. This in turn allows the signal to travel much farther then even thought possible.

So tonight I gave it a go and had amazing results. I taped the can to a telescope to make it easy to point and move back and forth.  I found 24 SID's being Access Points or other computers looking for other pears (PTP) to connect to with scanning in only a few directions and  I live in the suburbs! There must be many more.

Of the networks I found 3 were wide open and unencrypted and I was able to pirate there connections. By entering the IP 192.168.1.1 (this is the Router Gateway IP) you will be prompted for a password & I just entered the default of €œadmin€ and was able to even access the guys Router config. I changed the default channel of 6 to 11 and got even better signal range being less traffic on that channel.

One last thing to note: If you do make a connection into a neighbor€™s network be sure to click on your "My Network Places" Icon. If the neighbors network has any computers on his net with File Share on you might have access to the files in his hard drives too!

Excellent post Bam! Just wanted to clarify how you got the wifi antenna/adapter into the Pringles tube.

Did you use a USB wifi adapter, cut a hole into the Pringles tube the same size and use electrical tape to secure it?

Do you think this will also work for the older Wireless B frequencies?

        I used a USB D-Link DWL-G122 http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=334

        It does both B & G nets.
        802.11g Standard, 802.11b Compatible

I cut a rectangular hole the size of the USB connector 2 inches up from the metal bottom of the can. I wanted it tight so the foil lining of the can touches the metal connector housing and gets a good ground.

I then with my hand just pushed the connector end through the hole from within the tube and mated it with the mating base it comes with.

Retired the top 12.  Need a new dirty dozen.

Update: The new list is coming together: Nong Poy, Anita, Nok, Gif, Liisa Winkler, Kay, Nina Poon.  Is it possible to find 5 more?  Until then, GGs:  Jessica Alba, Yuko Ogura, Zhang Ziyi, Maggie Q, and Gong Li.

Awesome. This may actually help me within my house.

Does the can help with the transmitting end too, or just the receiving end?

I have a laptop downstairs and a wireless antennae upstairs.
                    Get a very weak connection.

I could easily "can" the antennae upstairs, but it wouldn't be so easy to put a can around the receiving antenae on the laptop. It's not a USB plug, it's a PCMCIA flat card that plugs into the side of the laptop.

I think you need a Pringles 'LAN Bluetooth Blueberry Wireless InfraRed' Chip to USB 2 adapter.

That should fix you right up!

Go into the router setup menu and change the channel the wi-fi is using. It's most likely set to channel 6 since this is the default channel. To me it sounds more like you have someone close by using the same channel and it's interfering with your signal. You really should not have any problems like that within your own home.

BTW what kind of wi-fi adapter or router are you using?

It *IS* on default channel 6. I just changed it to 11.

Try it on the new channel 11 mixed mode and see how it works.

                            Mixed mode is G & B

G is the newer systems and much better. Check that your PCMCIA card is of the G type. If you have an old B type then it's time to upgrade since your router is compatible with the G system. G works alot better and has a much better range.

If you do replace the PCMCIA then get a USB G like what I have. You can use it on any computer with a USB port.

Channel 11 is better than 6, but the important thing is that you do not share a channel. If you can, scan for available networks and see what channels are being used and pick something else.

You can also by a more powerful transmitting attenae for many routers.
