(andre459 @ Nov. 18 2006,08:37) called Big Questions which were interviews between Paul Davies and Philip Adams..
      thats quite pertinent.............

New Scientist is published today in UK, A special BIG questions issue to celebrate their 50th birthday and they even have a special section on Religion and all the other relevant topics

      Religeon
      LIfe and Death
      The Universe
      Biogenisis
      The mind

      etc etc etc

All the big hitters give an opinion and this includes Paul Davis, Max Tegmark and John D Barrow...the real deal for sure. some of the articles are mindblowing and the extended article by Roger Penrose is worth a £100 on its own.  Truly mindblowing.

Another very interesting hypothesis is that we are probably living in a virtual reality matrix. It sounds a bit mad but read the article and it makes sense(sort of)

I just bought it and cannot believe that they are only charging £3....this stuff is priceless..Go and buy a copy (if you can get one). It comes out next week in the Far East as they are always a week behind.

I own a newsagency so one of the perks is I can read the mags and then send them back. New Scientist came out last Friday in Aust but I haven't had a chance to read it yet.

There's also an interesting article in this weeks Time magazine. It's a discussion between Richard Dawkins, an athiest, and Francis Collins (he heads the team that helped map the human genome), who believes God set evolution in motion. Collins clings to the God of the Gaps whereas Dawkins makes it obvious you can't call yourself a scientist and still believe in God.
I don't get it, is this a magic show?

Stephen Rose really takes the Collins view to task in his book 'The Future of the Brain.'

His view is that 'scientists' who are desparate for a religious explanation tend to seek out areas of science that are not well charted (like quantum effects in the brain) and make up their own story. Once thier explanation is finally debunked they move their 'God' explanation to some other uncharted area.

It's a shell scam in my opinion.

Well here is a technical look at relgion

            Hell Froze Over

The following is allegedly an actual question given in a University of Washington chemistry mid-term exam.

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.

As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their faith, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can reliably project that all souls go to Hell.

With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.

            This gives two possibilities:

            1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls
enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase
            until all Hell breaks loose.

            2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in
Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell
            freezes over.
            So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my freshman year that, "it will be a cold night in Hell before I sleep with you, and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over.

The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls, leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being, which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting "Oh my God!"

(Allegedly this student received the only A.)
