I'm pretty much ready to put my money where Tomcat's mouth is.

I'll say right now that the birdflu will not become an epidemic/pandemic (whatever you want to call it). But, as I've learned in another thread, we need to put some specifics on this.

TC, what exactly is your prediction. What is your definition of an epidemic? And what is your timeline? (Cause I can't say "See, it didn't happen", and you just say "Yet".)

Give me a specific set of parameters and unless they are extremely vague or open ended, I'm ready to say it won't happen.

I may or may not have any cash to put up (I'll probably know by end of next week) but I'm sure ready to go for pride and bragging rights at a minimum.

Actually the papers i have were published in New Scientist last week as well and are in the public domain. About five years ago another article was published about this and it stated that " If we dont find it, it will find us".

Eventually the Virus will mutate into a version that jumps to Humans  and becomes contagious that is for sure. The dice is being rolled as we speak.

A pandemic is usually associated with deaths in millions. My bet is that within 5 years the shit will hit the fan and i will bet £200 that there is a pandemic where over a million loose there lifes due to HN51 variant. rememebr that there is also HN7 HN6 etc etc. Actually you could just say any bird flu variant.

If you are familair with DNA and RNA then i can explain all otherwise i can fax some notes that i have which explain it very nicely if ive still got them otherwise get last weeks New Scientist issue. or get the back issue.

People forget that the Bird Flu variant just after the first world war, Spanish Flu, killed 50 million;;;;;;;;;; more than were killed in the war i think.

Have a look for yourself if you think it is all a lot of hype, and I think you will have second thoughts about your doubts. Although the pandemic is not happening right now, it certainly will happen sometime. Just how soon sometime is not clear, but it seems it will be sooner rather than later.

I am a hospital pharmacist and feel that there needs to be more information about this so people can be prepared should the worse case scenario take place.

I don't need to "back up" anything. I don't know if you're a wanker. I just think the bird flu stuff is hysteria. Keep in mind, people were hysterical about the Tsunami and it's lasting effects... from what I've read in this forum, peoples expectations of slow rebuilding were vastly overestimated.

SARS put everyone into a hysterical tizzy as well. Only 774 people died worlwide from SARS. There were 8 confirmed contractions in the U.S., and NO SARS deaths in the U.S.

In science, it only takes one simple thing to disprove a theory, no amount of evidence can conclusively prove something in the positive.

So, are you saying less than 1 percent of 1 percent of the worlds population will die over the course of 5 years from the bird flu? While that's not exactly what I would call a scary pandemic proportion, I still think that's way too high an estimate.

Sure, saying "A million people will die" sounds like a lot, and sounds scary. But that's a drop in the bucket when you're talking about numbers in terms of human population.

If my math is right, it only takes about 6 days for a million people to die as it is.

Also, it's going to be a while if you want to wait five years to collect on our bet.

Are you saying there is no discernable event that will happen within, say, a year, on which you would be able to collect?

More specific parameters please. I'm talking about a bet based on a hypthesis, experiment, evidence basis. Not "I'll show you some article I read where some big shot important Dr. guy says what may happen in the future and HA! you'll have to pay up".
