I find it odd that they didn't cast Japanese actresses for the roles...

I agree. But, they were making an American movie, so things like relevance don't necessarily matter. Big ticket names matter more to the producers. Remember that The Last Samurai had that Scientologist dipshit, Tom Cruise. Heck, even going back to Rising Sun, there was Wesley Snipes pretending that he knew something about Japanese culture and fighting styles.

And given that we have lately remade Japanese and Korean movies (The Ring, The Grudge), rather than import them, I expect that this trend will continue. Meanwhile, there is a strong fascination with the Chinese and we use them as faux Japanese if necessary.

In any case, I suppose I'll see the flick before long. I think Mirimark and I will try to meet up and see it. Unless he's seen it already. (Maybe I missed a posting in this thread )
