  • The Demise of Stickman

Just saw this commentary in the news.

The big buzz in Bangkok this week, at least among expats, is the demise of the popular Stickmanbangkokcom website following a feud between web personalities. For those of you who have never enjoyed the guilty pleasure of perusing Stickman, his website comprised a compendium of turgidly written tips on living in Thailand and how to get work English teacher and a weekly column d g the goings-on at various "naughty nightlife" Venues. But, best of all, there is a "Readers' Submissions" section - which was the site's lifeblood - in which writers of varying abilities shared the ecstasies and travails of life in the Land of Smiles. Reading many of these pieces was like so many train wrecks, as writers poured out details of their emotional eviscerations and financial fleecings at the hands of Thailand's gimlet-eyed ladies of the night.

Stickman, otherwise known as Paul Owen, is an English teacher from New Zealand who works at a Bangkok college. In his Stickman guise, he also conducts "bar-girl Investigations". His nemesis is Keith Summers, an American in Thailand's north, whose online persona is John Galt of The Great Galt.

Summers recently launched a website, NotStickmanBangkokcom, devoted exclusively to debunking and decrying almost everything Stickman presented.

He took aim at Stickman€™s editorial endorsement, or otherwise, of various nightlife venues, and regularly questioned the legality of Stickman's bar-girl investigations.

Typical NotStickman invective included: "Stickman is a farce. He knows it. Behind the scenes Stickman is brash and brazen. He has a penchant to bully people he doesn't like (who he thinks are smaller than him). He hides in secret while he manipulates people and information for his own profit"

Mr. Summers' piece de resistance was his online publishing of Stickman's real name, picture and details of the school at which he teaches. Mr. Omen immediately removed everything except the innocuous living-in-Thailand tips.

Stickman addicts seeking their fix are now greeted with a disappointing edict: "The strains of working a full-time job and trying to run a website at the same time have taken their toll on me and I have decided to take a break from the site to concentrate on teaching."

Mr. Owen told Mangosauce.com, another Bangkok site, that he had received e-mail tirades from Mr. Summers for over a year. Mr. Owen rebuffed requests to meet him. Then, about three months ago, NotStickmanBangkokcom was born. Mr. Summers may feel like he has had the last laugh, but it's a Pyrrhic victory. After all, when the host dies, the parasite dies with it. And the death of Stickman has made Bangkok cyberspace immeasurably duller.
What have those of you from Bangkok heard about all of this?

Ah... there's always some jerk out there that wants to attack someone because they got too well known like Stickman. Don't you just hate people like that...

I have known Paul Owen for something like ten years now. He is a real rarity among Bangkok expats: a genuinely nice guy who acts with malice toward no one.

Paul has always written his column and maintained his site for fun and for no other reason. I can tell you from first-hand knowledge that he has been offered very large sums of money for the site (well up into six figures, speaking in US dollars) and has consistently refused to sell it. Why? Because he enjoyed it. He wasn't doing it for the money.

Now along comes this asshole and harrasses Paul personally to the point that he has to shut down his site completely, at least for a while. It is a stark reminder of the kind of low-life's that Thailand so frequently attracts. They walk away from their lost and useless lives in places like Frankfurt and Fresno; they decide that Thailand is their last, maybe their only hope; and then they end up here fucking up things for the rest of us who just want to be left in peace.  What a sad place this sometimes is.

I'd have to agree with oldasiahand's assessment of some of the refugee-expats I've come across in LOS. Some really are misfits; immature with unresolved issues, and ready to make it right by dragging others to their level.

LOS is a relaxed place where the shortcomings of someone like Summers are overlooked, and he is not reprimanded for what is senselessly destructive behavior.

I just wonder what can be done about guys like Summer ... not for retribution, but to take the heat off of someone like Paul Owen.

Up to the point that Galt/Summers crossed the line by posting Owen's personal information I had agreed with everything Galt had said about Owen. Glad to see
stickman is down and hope he stays down. Hypocrites like that sooner or later get what they deserve.

used to stickman a bit and whilst I enjoyed the stories I had an issue with his attitude towards ladyboys, seemed to think they were all yaba smoking theives. Then again I support freedom of expression even if you take offence to it.

Also having said that it was always miles ahead of Bangkok tonight which seems to be full of white trash or Thai visa. But then again to each his own. Just glad I found this site.

I always enjoyed his weekly column and i believe it offered good advice.

So what if he was paid to endorse bars? Most people want endorsements.

Galt is an egomaniac wanker who deserves all he gets.

I miss the site. It was fun, and occasionally informative.
Did I trust everything Stickman said, of course not. I don't trust any news site these days ( thanks FOX )

But "outting" him, and forcing him to bring down the site was just wrong. And now I will miss my Sunday evening entertainment.

I have a feeling this Galt guy will soon find Thailand very unpleasent for him and will be pushed to leave.

                  ps.

While I too didn't always see Stickman's point of view of life in general, Stickman's site will be missed.

I have it on good authority that it will be back online soon under a new structure in which Paul will play a lesser role (nudge, nudge, wink, wink), most likely within a couple of weeks.
