I'm surprised to hear about Israeli's and New Zealanders as backpackers.

I kind of assumed they were all goddam hippie liberal goat-food eating Americans. There's nothing I hate more than the wealthy American liberal do-gooder. I don't like them here in my own country.

I have a genteel, delicate flower of a teacher who went to Thailand to teach English for a little while after college. As part of the groups activities there, they took what she describes as a "tour of the slums", again in her words "which is condescending and insulting, as if you have to take a tour to find the poor".

As they were driving around, seeing panhandlers so diseased that their leg would be twisted back around their head, this one guy says "At least they're lucky they don't have to deal with our commercial materialism"

She said she dog cussed him six ways to Sunday.

I actually laughed when I read that line, one of those times where if you don't you'd probably cry and you know what?

It is now a common "right of passage" for kids, in their Gap year (between school and university) to travel around Asia and Australia. Of course they have little or no money so they rough it as best they can.

As Pigdogg says they could just stay at home and lie on the couch, at least they are trying!!

 They just stick to thier Khao San Road Ghetto sitting around drinking thier 7/11 cheap beer
So come on enlighten me whats the deal?

Billy and i met 2 Backpacker girls on plane from bangkok to phuket.they didnt have money to buy a snak on board air asia and i offer ours.they were very happy first time for them in thailand and they were going to stay in a cheap hostel

yer, on the whole, bp's are cool, and are genuinely interested in the culture, etc, but it's the baggy panted cunts that give them a bad name...fucking ridiculous, and as someone stated earlier, willing to haggle over 5 fucking baht(about 20 cents aus..would you even pick up 20c if you dropped it??) *sigh* these are also the pricks who look down on the tourists who go to thailand for fun(i.e lb's and gg's) and actually put a decent chunk of change into the economy...

I've done most of my travelling as a backpacker. As Surropan said it's the hippie element you have to look out for.

Yeah that's exactly why I used the prefix "pseudo." I actually respect the counterculture movement of the 60s, but it has degenerated into a fashion statement and a very non-egalitatian attitude today.
