Most of them are fine, just trying to make their money last so they can prolong their trip. I spent 6 months in s. america a couple of years back doing this when I got laid off but still found time for p4p and a few freebies. Just as in p4p there are cheap charley backpackers too, plenty of em who wouldn't spend christmas if you know what I mean.

I agree with you on the retards who think because they dress like locals (there's always one in LOS roaming around in a sarong thinking he's the shit) and those who argue looking to save approx 25 cents on a room/meal that they need a good slapping. The people that I chose to hang out with with certainly didn't hold back when it came to drinking and eating out but then we were much older than your typical backpacker.

As someone else said Israeli's were unquestionably the biggest pricks I have ever encountered anywhere in the world travelling and this wasn't one or two it was 99.99% of them. It wasn't just me seems all the other backpackers despised too but the south americans hated them most, nothing to do with politics just their disgusting greed and obnoxiousness. I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.

From reading this, it would seem everyone who posted was angelic, clean, rich, and worldly when they were younger.

I was a dirty backpacker many times. I had no money. I don't know if I was like the imbiciles you are all talking about or not. Maybe I was. I came from a small farming town in Quebec, Canada. Like how much more isolated can you get?

What I can say is that it changed my life, and part of why I live my life in Thailand now. It drove me to learn about other cultures, languages, and made me a more global person.

It's the people who sit at home and think the world = their country and other cultures and religions are backward, that are detestable.

That being said, I do think that the time is over for physically dirty backpackers and extremely poorly dressed. That might have been ok in the past, and even then dubiously, but there is just no excuse now given most backpacker's wealth and understanding of cleanliness and appearance from their own countries.

These backpackers are kids, learning, doing a few dumb things along the way, saying a few dumb things...not like any of us of course.

I think you may be missing the point that they like to be dirty, on purpose. It's part of their view of themselves.

They are not dirty on accident. I am speaking of hippies in general. I was toung and dumb, but I was never a hippy.
