The Nation has reported more on this story - murder suspect found, plus weapon and suspect has confessed. No mention of Russian mafia, but would not be surprised if they were involved.

    From The Nation, March 3/07

    Pattaya tourist killing gun found

Police yesterday found the murder weapon used in killing two Russian women in Pattaya on February 24.

The 9mm Chinese-made Norinco pistol was found in a pond pinpointed by a witness, who is a close friend of murder suspect Anuchit Lamlert and volunteered information to police about the weapon yesterday after Anuchit was arrested on Thursday night.

The unidentified witness bought the handgun for Bt900 from Anuchit after it was used to kill Tatiana Tsimfer, 30, and Liubov Svirkova, 25, while they sat drinking in deckchairs on Jomtien Beach.

He later threw it away in the pond near his home in Chon Buri's Sri Racha district after Anuchit failed to show up to buy it back as he had promised.

The witness now faces a charge of possessing a firearm without permission but will have the offence dropped in return for his testimony in court about Anuchit selling the handgun to him, police said.

Police quoted Anuchit as saying that he had merely wanted to rob the victims but had shot them dead after they yelled and screamed. He fled without taking anything.

According to police, Anuchit has committed numerous crimes, mainly robbery and mugging of foreign tourists in Pattaya.

He was temporarily released after allegedly shooting a South Korean tourist in January.

Both Anuchit and the witness are in police custody separately, and acting police chief Seripisut Temiyavej will today arrive in Pattaya to question Anuchit.

        I don't need a friend THAT close!

He was temporarily released after allegedly shooting a South Korean tourist in January.
        Here's how the conversation went...

Cop: Now then, Nok... we're gonna let you go for now, but no more shooting tourists, eh?
Nok: I swear, guv. I'll just go home and watch the telly.
        Cop: Good boy.

        TiT! (Typical in Thailand!)

Update on the murder case from The Nation, March 5/07

          PATTAYA SLAYINGS
Police continue to seek Russian murder motive

Suspect re-enacts beach shooting and insists it was a robbery gone wrong

Police continue to seek information about the backgrounds of two Russian women murdered in Pattaya, in spite of having arrested a suspect.

Chief investigator Lt-General Assawin Khwanmueng said diplomatic channels were assisting and could turn up a motive for the slayings.

Tatiana Tsimfer, 30, and Liubov Svirkova, 25, were shot dead by a Thai man about dawn as they sat in chairs on Jomtien Beach on February 24.

Anuchit Lamlert is in custody and has admitted killing the two in a robbery gone wrong.

But police want to know if either woman had personal or business disputes at home. They arrived in Thailand with a Russian tour party on February 16.

Assawin said a Russian man had told police Tsimfer confessed to marital problems.

Police now believe Anuchit did not kill the victims because he was hired or ordered to by another, he said.

Earlier information suggested Anuchit was hired by a Thai woman who was afraid her Russian husband would leave her for one of the victims whom the husband had association with after she visited his Pattaya tour company.

Police have arrested a third suspect, Monthol Bunmee, who owns the red Honda Wave motorcycle used by Anuchit in the killings.

Monthol has been charged with withholding information about a murder while Thinnakorn Meklee, the owner of the murder weapon, has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm.

Anuchit has shown police how he located the victims and attempted to rob them. He insists he shot the two when they screamed for help.

"I killed them because I was afraid they would remember my face," he said.

However, acting national police chief Seripisut Temiyavej still doubts the claim.

"There are inconsistencies in his confession and the evidence," Seripisut said during a visit to Pattaya on Saturday to question Anuchit.

"I believe the murder may be linked to a crime organisation and there may be other people behind it."

Seripisut told businessmen who met him on his trip it was time to clean up crime and mafia gangs deeply rooted in Pattaya.

Ok, so the police suspect it is more than a robbery gone wrong, let's see what they finally turn up.

Maybe the BIB will get one right!

i predict they'll turn up "mucho dinero".

many millions of baht may well change hands before this story fades to the back pages...still unresolved...and those who really run pattaya will keep on running it...

            but that's just imho.
