  • Beating the English!

    Can someone please explain what it is about beating the English that is so high on the agenda of many people who are not English!

    It's an amazing thing that seems to infect the whole world... Closer to home the Welsh absolutely must beat the English at Rugby, The Scots have a national holiday if they can squeak past the English in soccer.

    Further afield the USA enjoyed it's finest sporting glory when it beat the English in a footy game 50 years ago and the Aussies have 'questions in the house' if they lose against us at cricket!

    It's better to be hated than pitied, I suppose... but it's better still to be loved! But that ain't gonna happen, is it!

    You'll have to explain it to me because I don't understand. I've met loads of Aussies and liked them all but talk to them about cricket and the English then depending on the game/series then you'll get a cold red cast drop over the antipodeans facial features and an unstoppable unceasing hatred begins to emerge.

    The Americans are not used to losing anything because as part of the US culture "losing is not an option!" So when they lose against the Englsih they always remind us how lucky we are not to be speaking German!

    As for the insane nationalism of the Scots... I don't think I've met a Scot that I didn't like, but don't start them on football... you'll not survive that encounter for sure.

    So what can it be?

    The English don't hate anyone. We aren't show offs that revel in winning, nor do we pout when losing, either. We aren't especially good at football, cricket and rugby, but (like other countries) we are competitive and we try to win on the field.

    Some years back I remember being in a bar when England and Scotland could secure entry into The World Cup if some results went in favour of the teams playing that night. (They weren't playing each other.)

    Every single Englishman was urging the Scots to win their game so they would go on and play at the big dance. But since that day I have seen the scots baying for blood when it's another country playing against England.

    So it's not about just beating the Englsih. It's about seeing them lose and seeing them humiliated and against anyone will do, too!

    I can't say that I've ever felt this way about another country. The English are good losers and we are supporters of our neighbours and friends during sporting rivalries.

    Am I just imagining this or is there really something in some peoples psyche about crushing the English or at least seeing it happen?

    Anyway... feed off the historical injustices, perceived or otherwise, be they political, social or sporting. That is why, no matter the state of the countires in terms of playing ability and skill, the scalp of England will always be the most treasured.

      I'll tell ya Stogie.......I personally don't have any problem with trying to "beat the English" quite frankly we don't play the same sports and the ones that we do one of us don't play as well. Soccer for instance is, as discussed before, a passing fancy in the US and mainly with the younger kids and as a result not a competition at all. The game 50 years ago that you allude to is really not that big of a thing to the casual sports fan in the US, I consider myself a pretty much sports expert but didn't have a clue about the game until the movie came out. Other sports like basketball that we share, the English just hasn't moved up the ladder like other European countries like Greece, Germany, Italy and Spain. In fact when I was stationed in Panama several(several) years ago I was one of the coaches of the Army post basketball team and we went to Belize to play the British Army team in a three game series. We won 96-27, 85-33 and 105-38. But when we sent our soccer team there to play they were clobbered 7-0, 8-1 and 10-2.

      At any rate I root for the US teams in the Olympics but being an ex-track man myself I rooted for Sebastian Coe and Ovett all the time as well. I always root for some englishman to finally get to the finals at Wimbeldon. But I do root heavy against Colin Montgomerie in Golf.

      Bottom line SB I think it might be more of a European and Aussie thing then something the Americans are guilty of. Frankly I worry more about hating on the Ohio States, Chicago White Soxes, Colorado Avalanches and Miami Heats of the Cont. US

      It's good to King........no matter what the pay

      Courage is being scared to death__and saddling up anyway

      Billy Jaffe, Radio Voice of the Thrashers:
      ”I have absolutely No problem with Ohio State. It has a beautiful campus, and for a Junior College it has really great Academics.”

      "Gentlemen and ladies, 'Those Who Stay Will Be Champions' is for you too. It's for every Michigan fan that's out there. When the going gets tough, you don't cut and run. It's not the Michigan way. If I heard it once from the old man, I heard it a thousand times -- when the going gets tough you find out who your real friends are, and that's why we must stay. Because there will be championships, and this staff and these kids will bring those championships here."

          SB, take it easy, I always root for the English Football squad on the International scene. Although that has been a wasted exercise here of late. It seems that the squad likes to self distruct.

          You may ask why does an American root for the English, well theyplay one of the most exciteing brands of football. And actually an old Welsh friend of mine,(he coached Ian Rush in Schoolboy) would root for England aganist anyone but Wales.

            I can't speak for the majority of Americans because I've never anyalized it.

             But beating the English for me is Kind of beating my Big Brother in a Fist Fight.
            I respect the English.  So when we beat them at anything I have great joy.

             I also Look at Europe as a Large Mass of Billions, and the Americans as Few up against the Mass's.
             For me,  its not out of disrespect,  its about the small little brother who got booted out for being rude and disrespecting the Family name.   Only to grow up one day and say;

              IN YOUR FACE BIAAAAAAATCH !

            Call it Genetic instincs,  I have no other reason because I have nothing but Love for;
            the ;
            English,
            Scotts and Irisishman.
            I guess we never really do forget where we come from even though you've never been there.

                              erm, excuse me, we have a national holiday whenever our football team beats ANYBODY! - thats why we have so few holidays

                              and for the avoidance of doubt 0-0 is classed as a victory!
