    From the Florida Times-Union:

    Funeral of note

Quite a buzz was generated by Wednesday's Metro-front story about the funeral of a 27-year-old transsexual, who graduated from Orange Park High School as Jeffrey Bryan Schley and later became Anna Alexandre.

The paper gave more attention to Schley's passing than it typically does for many in Jacksonville who are vastly more accomplished and more prominent, if not more interesting.

A paid obituary on Sunday for Jeffery (Anna) Bryan Schley had used the pronoun "he" to describe the deceased, but an accompanying photo appeared to be of a woman.

The paid notice contained no mention of the journey from shy student to drag queen to a transsexual who became a porn star. No mention of the Web site with images of the changed body or bawdy performances in Las Vegas and elsewhere that led to Schley being listed among Wikipedia's top transsexual porn stars.

The story trotted out those details and told of her acceptance when she returned to Jacksonville two years ago and of the closeness of her family and how her parents got used to having a daughter around. "They called her Annie," the story said.

Some readers praised the story, including Schley's brother, for the respect it showed the transgender community and one of its prominent members. Others were sharply critical.

"A disgrace," is how Sally Lane described the story. "This paper seems to be pushing sexual stuff on kids." She was among the readers who wondered why the story was even in the Times-Union to start with.

"That's about the worst thing I have ever seen in the Times-Union," said Jack Allen, who reads the newspaper with his 9-year-old grandson who had questions about the story. "I don't see how that is news," Allen said. "It is inappropriate for a family newspaper."

Although the story gave a glimpse into a very real part of our community and was reported well, it should have been placed on an inside page, in my view.

Christians are all violent sick people. It's a shame that they have been allowed to fester and breed amongst normal people.

I can only imagine the reactions if she had of lived here in Tennessee. Florida is by far more liberal and forward thinking then Tennessee ever will be.

I think that almost anywhere in the US outside of maybe SF, LA and NY would have displayed the same reactions. It will be a long time if ever before the general public as a whole will understand and/or accept transgenders. Its sad but true and yes I think a lot of this predicated on the so-called christian coalition.

Having been raised in a staunch christian background the hypocrisy and hatred of others who don't march lockstep with their beliefs has totally turned me away from any type of beliefs that I ever had before and has made me completely agnostic.

"Gentlemen and ladies, 'Those Who Stay Will Be Champions' is for you too. It's for every Michigan fan that's out there. When the going gets tough, you don't cut and run. It's not the Michigan way. If I heard it once from the old man, I heard it a thousand times -- when the going gets tough you find out who your real friends are, and that's why we must stay. Because there will be championships, and this staff and these kids will bring those championships here."

The thread is about religeon and religous attitudes. My comment is on-topic and salient. Commenting on "beautiful hookers in seedy bars" would NOT be relevent on this thread.

If some people want to believe in ghosts and victimise people because of their sexuality etc then they must expect to be scorned by normal people.

The thought of organised religion scares me to death.

People who through the week live lives dominated by capitalism and gaining wealth all of a sudden on sunday become lowly individuals in the face of the lord.

            Total Bollocks.
seriously pig headed, arrogant, double standard smart ass poster!

              ???
sorry stogie, i don't get your point. are you being sarcastic? ironic? what?
other than the thread's title referencing 'the bible belt', the actual posts in this "thread" are more about the reaction of conservative and closed minds to the reality of transexualism in the world and whether their kids can read about it without running offf to get butt-fucked.

nowhere is "christian" or "religion" of any sort mentioned.

had this occured in other parts of the world i am confident there are plenty of places where many "fundamentalists" (i.e., uptight judgmental assholes) of whatever religious stripe would be equally perturbed by their being forced to talk to their children about anything involving s-e-x, and especially about s-e-x with a beautiful woman who has a d-i-c-k.

and sorry to say but in terms of numbers and degree of socialization, these folks who can't bear to face the world without an invisible friend to tell them every sperm is sacred are a lot more "normal" than any of us ladyboy fanciers and perhaps it is we who should therefore expect to be scorned.

so before we - like anna alexandre - become no more than obits, let us enjoy every minute of our scornable lives  as we take the 'walk of shame' enroute to our living nirvana while these friends of the lord w/small minds can only point and mock while they whither inside.

not wrong, just too restrictive - kinda like an overly tight bible belt.
but but no worries and i hope no offense taken.
i'd offer you a hug but i just read on the other thread how that gives you the willies

Isn't the phrase "family newspaper" an oxymoron?

Kids don't sit and read the newspaper with there mom & dad these days, do they?? Aren't they busy in the other room playing video games or something?

My kids don't read the f_in' newspaper these days!!!
It's been a rough day. I got up this morning ... put a shirt on and a button fell off. I picked up my briefcase, and the handle came off. I'm afraid to go to the bathroom.
