In the 90's the murder rate spiked downward.

    The reason?

Roe v Wade 1973. The people most likely to murder in the 90's were aborted in the 70's.

The open border does not help either.

not really a big add on with the open border they usually just kill each other in drunken fights. the new orleans crowd kills and robs much more outside of their areas. by the way this is not just an opinion but was posted in the houston chronicle

It brings to mind something I read about the Tsunami.

Apparently, it's been shown that after every disaster, not surprisingly, crime rates rocket (this is after the disaster, and after things have kind of cleaned up). Because, many families are put out of work, visitors generally shun the place (and thus anyone in the tourism industry loses income), and so, there's basically more desperate people who go into crime.

I wonder if Rita and Katrina triggered a crime rise?

I would guess several things contribute to the Houston murder rate. Katrina refugees certainly must, as Houston was a prime destination (and New O was never that safe anyway).

But Houston is hard to police ... too spread out. And they don't have the sophisticated strategies of New York, Chicago and LA for policing ... in fact Houston has traditionally had a mismanaged police force.

The border may be a problem, as Houston would be a useful place to trade drugs; but I suspect the Mexican connection may be overblown.

Also, Texas has a gun culture (Texans seem to think these things are toys) and people shoot each other over trifles.

Look at the bright side ... Houston has too many people, and this could be natures way of controlling overpopulation

sorry to say but most of the excess murder or peak has been tracted to new orleans scum. these are people who have been on welfare for generations not just years. they live and die being on welfare and breed more to be on welfare. pure trash and they need to be culled out of the herd. where i grew up this meant putting the cattle to be culled in pens and sending them to the slaughter house. if this seems hard just take a trip to areas in houston where they have settled. or if you have been to the bad areas of NO before the hurriccanes you would know what i mean. these are animals and they need to be treated as such.

on a side note i have one guy in my neighborhood who is from that area.he is living with family that was from NO. he has harrased one of my female neighboors while i was outside. he understands now not to catcall the ladies in my neighborhood. he keeps to himself and looks scared everytime i see him.

texas does has a gun culture and the hell if anyone will take mine from me.

                Does poverty cause crime?

A study done in London in the late 1880's showed the levels of poverty/prosperity street by street.
The crime level related pretty closely to the financial wealth of the neighbourhood.

One thing that this and some later studies have shown in the UK is that it's normally the poor stealing from the poor.

well me think they are poor because they are fucking lazy and prefer easy ways to get the money... i know its kinda plain thought but sometime it works better than a complicate shrink theory.

I think there is a difference in the Tsunami effect (and Rita and Katrina) and poverty.

Poverty would generally mean people who have had low income a while and are in to a certain life situation.

In disasters, you have people who have not experience poverty, suddenly are in poverty, and all the pschology that goes on with experiencing the disaster. Combined it creates a situation of extreme desperation and thus the increase in crime from people who generally haven't been poor before. At least that's my understanding of what happens.

Only partially related to this, but interesting to note, there are people who prey on disasters. My friend observed, DURING the Tsunami, or more precisely, immediately after the 2nd wave, while he was swimming in the street to get to safety, guys breaking in jewellry stores and taking money off dead people during the chaos. Also, there are real estate watchers who follow disasters looking for good deals from distraught and desperate people. A lot did that in Thailand. All pretty sick stuff.

Well, let's slow down a minute.

America certainly has it's problems with gun crime and all crime, but in America it's often seen as worse than other places because crime and statistics are better reported.

Slightly further south it's the Mexican polititions that are commiting all the murders and so these are less well publicised.

Africa is just a lawless shithole and so is most of the Middle East. Britain is very qucikly turning into the next Lebanon with a fractious population who all hate each other.

There are a few peacable countries left but the Africans, Arabs and Muslims will soon fuck them into the ground.

Maybe Thatchers 'back to Victorian values' wasn't such lunacy after all!

With the rise of religeons and the sheer number of stupid poeple we are on a road to hell.

Thank fuck I've only got 30 years left to do before I'm out of it.
