Lesbian ejected from restaurant for looking too masculine
The Sydney Morning Herald - July 3, 2007

A bouncer at a popular restaurant in Manhattan's Greenwich Village neighbourhood ejected a lesbian customer from the women's bathroom after last month's gay pride march because she looked too masculine, the woman said on Monday.

Khadijah Farmer, 27, said the incident occurred June 24 at the Caliente Cab Company restaurant, where she had gone with her girlfriend and another friend to have dinner after the march.

Farmer said she was using the women's bathroom when a male bouncer burst in and banged on the stall door, saying a customer had complained that there was a man in the women's room.

"I said, 'I am a woman and I am where I am supposed to be'," said Farmer, speaking at a news conference.

"I offered to show him some identification. I was told that's neither here nor there."

Caliente Cab Company, a Mexican restaurant known for its enormous margaritas and Checker-cab decor, did not return a call for comment.

Farmer said the bouncer escorted her to her table and forced her party to pay their bill and leave.

"I felt embarrassed and humiliated," said Farmer, a Manhattan resident who works as a counsellor at a residential program for people with disabilities.

"I'm just hurt that even my wanting to prove that I'm female wasn't enough."

Farmer is being represented by the Transgender Legal Defence and Education Fund, which is demanding that the restaurant train its staff not to discriminate on the basis of gender identity and expression.

New York City law prevents discrimination on the basis of gender identity.

Farmer is not a transgender person, but she said her appearance is masculine enough that she is sometimes mistaken for a man.

"I'm never upset with that," she said. "I say very kindly, 'I'm female.' Usually I get, 'I'm so sorry'."

I'd love to hear the 'other side' of this story...

I'l bet it goes something like this...

"The customer grew increasingly agitated and refused to produce her ID when asked to do so. She appeared to be under the influence of alcohole and was rude and abrasive to the restaurant staff. The security officer realised she was disturbing the other guests and asked her to leave. He escorted her back to her table and explained the situation to her friends who then all left peacefully."

Shitty margs at this joint, way to sweet

I think Stogie's alternative story is much closer to the truth.

Bathrooms are something we take for granted but a real issue for TS.

Who wants to hold it in especially when drinking?  I discreetly pissed outside twice last night.  But if caught I'm sure I could convince a cop that I was a drunk not a perv, but not so if I was wearing a skirt.

I'm halfway to Stogie's postiion. I often hear about these incidents where someone is discriminated against, then later, on page 32 it is reported (and often you have to find out in some alternative news source or blog) that the whole thing was intentionally provoked.

Like that bunch of Imams that got pulled from the flight. That was an intentionally staged and provoked incident. I'll guarantee it.

This happened on the same day as some gay rights parade? These people know PR and it just fits too perfectly. It is a well known, and admitted, though rarely reported fact that Rosa Parks sitting at the front of the bus in protest was not some random act because she was tired one day. They had planned this protest for months. It was done twice before, but the girls were unwed and pregnant, and it was decided they did not make PR worthy subjects. They finally decided on Parks because of her image.

On another note, I'm a complete advocate of private property. If you want to kick someone out of your restaurant because you don't like their hair color, it's no business of the government to say otherwise. Does this mean there will be restaurants with signs that say "No Blakcs or Irish"... Yes.

It's also the only way you will ever have real and actual freedom. Restaurants where people can freely gather with whomever they want, smoke, drink, do heroin or whatever else they want. You can't have true freedom without true freedom. And you will never legislate everyone to love each other. Without private property rights, none of your other "rights" matter. Where are you going to practice any other right if the goverment does not respect the concept of you having any place to stand?

There's a famoous foto of a guy on the bus that people assume is some random racist but he's actually a journalist.

Hey, most everything today is a photo op.  A demonstartion is staged and one network is contacted in advance and promised an exclusive.

When the camera rolls the demonstartion begins, when the camera leaves so do the protestors.

Nothing really wrong with this I suppose, why not reach millions on the telly rather than a few people on a streetcorner.

But things are seldom as they appear.

On that note... the big news reported that Barrack Obama had "throngs" of supporters, around 3000 for some speech. There were protesters there too, but those didn't make the news.

A few years ago Rush Limbaugh did a book signing, and 15,000 people showed up to get their books signed. Three people protested across the street, one woman and her two daughters.

The newspaper the next day ran a close of shot of the three women and the headline said "Protesters at Limbaugh Appearance". And you wonder why the other three main networks are attacking FOX News station... they've had monolithic hegemonic homogenic control over what people hear and see and believe for the past 60 plus years.
