(stogie bear @ Aug. 16 2007,07:45) Trevor's a bit of a pussy for allowing the guy to freeloads off him for 6 months. You can't blame Brian for trying to manipulate him into as much free shit as possible!
Do you think Trevor is allowing Brian to freeload, it sounds like Trevor is a good guy who helps out anyone who needs a hand and if Brian has to "MANIPULATE" someone who is helping him out, then Brian's a shithead to begin with.

(pentire @ Aug. 16 2007,06:52) Brian should definitely pay his share from here on in and is a bit of a cunt for not offering to do so before now while taking full advantage of Trevor's very generous gesture.
Well, you say that, but maybe when you don't own a car (like Brian) you don't really understand the expenses of owning one. Or even if you do understand the costs of running a car you don't relate it to your own situation. You kind of just take the fact that he has a car and take it for granted.

Maybe he's feeling a bit hurt that after all this time Trevor has suddenly decided that it's not a courtesy call each day and that it's now a practical (or impractical) arrangement that needs to be negotiated.

        If it's a test, I flunked...
Same here kahuna, I'm "baffled" by it all too

I think Brian should pay for half for gas. I do carpool time to time with my Boss we live veryclose by. And I did offer him some cash but he denied,,, so I buy him lunch or we go for happy hour and I pay for couple of drinks. Its only make sense. If Brian is half decent person will do something nice to even things out. well at least thats what I think....

For anyone really serious, the worst part isn't the sharing of the cost, but the fact your schedules have to match. If the boss decides you've got to work late, then if you're Brian you haven't got much to say if you've not been sharing the burden, and so it's off to the train for ya.

Handling this is tricky. It's not merely gas, insurance, maintenance, and other calculable costs. It's also the incalculables, such as friendship, convenience, etc.

The best solution might be to shake things up. For instance, Trevor gets a girlfriend, joins a football (soccer) club, or otherwise finds something to do after work than going home. Going to work earlier or later (and/or doing the same about leaving) could work, but Brian could simply adjust his life a little to take advantage of the free ride. The new activity would or should be good for him in some way, and if he quits it, he can re-offer the rides to Brian, but say that he's really been giving his costs a careful thinking, and needs to split the costs somehow. The problem however is that he may seem like a rent collector in due course, if Brian shirks the costs. If Brian bites but doesn't keep with paying, then just go on with getting another activity. Why keep up with a guy who's behavior is somehow an irritant. Brian's wealth and stress level are going in the right direction but the same can't be said for Trevor.

Another idea might be to get the employer to chip in, and give a carpool spot and other perks. Many large employers do do that. Even if the costs are controlled, it's still nice to adjust for the stress of coordinating schedules by giving the driver a little perk.

The Bear was bored and out of drink when he came up with this one. How about Trevor is having a problem getting a hard on and he ask Brian to help out with the girl friend . After 6 months she is knocked up and trevor hasn't hit it in that time he ask Brian to help out with the abortion, chip in for the Dr. bills and he takes a runner. Well which one is the wanker here.

If I'm a passanger in a friend's car I'll pay for gas fill ups and all tolls.

On the other hand, a friend of mine just told me he downloaded every episode of the Sopranos.

I figure when I move to Thailand I'll bring a laptop and external hard drive full of things to watch if I get bored.

I wasn't planning on compensating him for the Sopranos.

I think Trevor should extend the courtisy of dropping brian off at the train station each morning.
