Wish I could sleep on my 13 hour flights but I can't

Thankfully Etihad Airway's have superb entertainment systems so I dont get bored

Last time I spent over 2 hour's looking at every No 1 Hit records in the going back to the 1950's and listening to the one's I had forgotten all about

If I'm not indulging in wathing film's or listening to the hundreds of CD's they have I think of

Same Same on the way back but its more of a

When you get to BKK go down the dodgy Drug stores on lower Sukhumvit. Most won't sell without a perscription but I found one near soi7 that will sell you as much 10mg vallium as you want. Drop one of them on your flight and you'll get atleast some sleep.

And don't try getting pissed on long hall. If you pass out for the whole trip it's a result but if you pass out for 30 minutes and then wake up with a mother of a hang over it's no fun at all.

The easiest flight for me is the non-stop from Singapore to New York, 17 hours,  that leaves at noon.   I get a great night sleep at the hotel airport and wake up right before the flight.

I stay awake the whole flight never getting bored with their inflight video on demand and am comfortable cause lots of legroom.

For most flights though the best thing is to put in the effort to get a good seat such as bulkheads with lots of legroom, arriving early to get an emergency exit row etc.

Most airlines fill up from the front first so choosing a seat in the back maximizes the chance of an empty seat next to you.

And sitting in the aisle of the center it's more likely the next seat will be empty than if sitting in the aisle of the side.

And sitting in the aisle-center gives you the opportunity to get 4 accrooss, just like playing Connect 4 with bargirls.

When you get on the plane, check out the back and see if you see empty seats, if so ask theflight attendent if you can move, they always say yes,

Me too! But I love window seats when I travel to a new country, so I can see how everything looks from above.

PigDogg - great advice! If I travel to a place where the window seats won't have any fascination, I think your adviec is worth trying.

If and when I ever visit LOS, I'm sure I'll be awake the whole time learning Thai on the way over.

For about 3 countries that I've visited for long stretches, I usually tried to spend the time cramming to learn the language and various important landmarks so I can get around more easily. If I take it seriously, I can learn about 20 words per day when I travel. I always hope, but I'm not sure I've succeeded, that I can learn about 50 or so on the flight, since my arrival is so soon. It is usually just easier to learn everything once I'm there, even the landmarks.

Update: The new list is coming together: Nong Poy, Anita, Nok, Gif, Liisa Winkler, Kay, Nina Poon.  Is it possible to find 5 more?  Until then, GGs:  Jessica Alba, Yuko Ogura, Zhang Ziyi, Maggie Q, and Gong Li.

POL, you have a pretty good system of occupying yourself during your long flights! I am lucky, being short 5'3" I still have a reasonable amount of leg room even in economy, so I can sleep ok during the long flights (14+hrs from Canada, or 7 hrs from Middle East to LOS). Some things that help as mentioned before - inflatable neck pillow (stops stiff necks!), sleep mask, and ear plugs (quite handy if there are babies/children nearby!). I also watch the movies as it helps pass the time. I get motion sickness, so reading if there is even slight turbulence is tough. I do use Gravol (Dramamine, aka dimenhydrinate) to combat motion sickness. Noise canceling headphones are also a good idea if you want to splurge a bit.

Taking work along to do on the flight is probably not a good idea, unless you are able to travel business class.

Thanks, but there's too many other factors. The first time it seems possible is in 2009, and now I'm guessing not even until 2010.

However, I'll post notes if I'm going to be anywhere else exciting before then. You may see me at the Olympics next year. I think it's the first year they allow post-ops to compete among women, and I may offer to do the official inspection.

POL, hey come on! Be creative, it is only 4hr 40 min flight from Beijing to Bkk - think about making a side trip! I will probably be in LOS at that time since it is during the summer break!

You can't beat flying Emirates Business Class to LOS from the UK. Champagne, great food, reasonable movies and plenty of room to stretch out.

Having very young kids means the missus and I very rarely go out to watch films. Hence if I fly london-sing or london-bkk I usually cram 4 films in. Helps if you fly Sing airlines as they update monthly and are usually very recent.

I work rotating shifts, 1 week on days 2 days off, 1 week on swing 24 hours off, 1 week on mid-nights 4 days off. I try to sch. my trips at the end of mid-nights but I am still tired when I arrive.

Even when I do not go to Thailand I am in jet lag just because of my sch.

I started flying EVA because of economy delux, bigger seat more leg room, for a bit more money. I sleep as much as possible and try to arrive at mid day that way I can stay awake as long as possible before bed time, If I cannot stay awake I will take a 2 hour nape. The one thing I have learned is when tired go to sleep, I have been to Thailand enough that I will not miss anything and if I do I will make it up on the next trip.

To all of you guys going soon have a good flight and a good time.
