I always understood that the name florin came from the Netherlands - although looking it up on Wikipedia it says Florence in Italy.

I think it was introduced into England about the time of Elizabeth I when we and the Dutch were allies fighting the Spanish.

I knew what it was without thinking. I've got one somewhere with George VI's head on it.
